ALEXANDRIA, VA -- This week's Old Town Alexandria "WOW" house is located at 301 Saint Asaph St. The home features five bedrooms and 3.5 baths. Here's more about this special property, from its listing:

The Historic Lafayette House, a magnificent period home in the Adam style, hosted General Lafayette during his extended visit to Old Town on his grand tour of America at the invitation of President James Madison in 1824. The Lafayette House has been home to many notable early historical figures, including Nelly Custis Lewis and her family, as well as Thomas, Ninth Lord Fairfax.

Exceptional details of this extraordinary home include the molded elliptical transom feature of the doorway, with graceful lunettes on each side. The breathtaking entry hall, with the custom Zuber mural of General Lafayette reviewing his troops at West Point and the three story hanging staircase and curved doors in the lower hall and on the staircase, reminiscent of Latrobe and Bullfinch, are just a few of the notable features of this historic and architecturally significant house.

The elegant double parlors, with Adam mantles, 12' ceilings and pocket doors are enhanced by beautiful woodwork and original fauxed doors leading to the entry hall. The dining room was expanded in the 1850's and comfortably seats twelve at dinners, is thought to be the location where West Virginia separated from Virginia in the early 1860's.

On the upper level there are three or four bedrooms, most notably the placqued room where General Lafayette stayed during his visit as well as a very commodious library with incredible light flooding in through the original windows on two sides. On the third floor there are two additional bedrooms and full bath often used by guests. All floors are of heart pine and thought to be original to the house as is much, if not all of the beautifully detailed woodwork throughout.
