ALEXANDRIA, VA — Automated enforcement of speeding violations in school zones will resume when the school year begins in Alexandria.

According to the City of Alexandria, the speed cameras will begin enforcement again on Monday, Aug. 19, the first day of school for Alexandria City Public Schools. The speed cameras are located near Francis C. Hammond Middle School on Seminary Road between Kenmore Avenue and North Jordan Street; John Adams Elementary School and Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School on North Beauregard Street between North Highview Lane and Reading Avenue; and George Washington Middle School on Mount Vernon Avenue between Braddock Road and Luray Avenue. No new locations were added since the previous school year.

When the school zones are active with flashing signs, $100 tickets will be issued to drivers who violate the speed limit. These areas have a 15 mph speed limit when school zones are active. Violations are typically recorded by the camera and must be confirmed by a law enforcement officer before a citation is sent to the registered car owner.

Under 2020 Virginia legislation, localities can place speed cameras in school zones and highway work zones. Alexandria City Council unanimously approved an ordinance allowing speed cameras in school zones and highway work zones in October 2022. Cameras launched with a warning period at the end of the 2022-2023 school year before full enforcement started on Sept. 18, 2023. Speed cameras are one of the initiatives in the city’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate fatal and severe crashes by 2028.
