Jeff Bezos May Buy Major Reston Developer: Report

JBG Smith has numerous projects in Reston, and Amazon's owner is rumored to be considering snapping up the company.

RESTON, VA -- It's no secret that Northern Virginia is a frontrunner to land Amazon's massive second headquarters. And it's no secret that developer JBG Smith has plenty of projects in the Reston area. What is a secret is where Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will actually put this second headquarters, but one report suggests that he may buy JBG Smith -- and that could have huge implications for Northern Virginia as a whole.

JBG Smith Properties, Inc., is based on Chevy Chase, Md., but the developer owns lots of property in the Reston and Herndon area.

The Washington Business Journal reports that there have been plenty of rumors -- albeit unfounded ones, it acknowledges -- that Bezos is considering personally acquiring JBG Smith, which would pave the way for him to put his new headquarters in prime NoVa real estate that JBG already owns. The report pinpoints Crystal City in Arlington as a frontrunner, but JBG also owns a lot of property in Reston and Herndon that could be part of a plan to build the new campus.

For example, JBG Smith owns RTC West, and has big plans for development in the coming years -- multiple restaurants have already moved in or have announced plans to move in. The developer also owns office buildings on Wiehle Avenue, Sunrise Valley Drive, and Elden Street in Herndon.

Amazon officials reportedly visited Herndon along with other Northern Virginia locations earlier this year, according to the Washington Post.
