RESTON, VA — During Thursday night's Reston Association Board meeting, Michael Collins, who represented apartment owners, tendered his resignation. Collins, who has been a member of the board for two terms, was serving as its secretary during the present term.

"His last turn to the board was a period of great personal stress for Michael," RA Board President John Farrell said, announcing Collins' resignation at the start of the meeting. "He lost his spouse after a battle with a devastating illness, and yet he continued to serve our community with grace and dignity."

Collins resigned from the board "with a heavy heart," but he made the decision to step down due to career commitments.

"Rather than try and give it half an act, he decided to give an opportunity for somebody else to serve," Farrell said.

Joining the board in April 2020, Collins was reelected in April 2023 for a second term, according to RA. He had also served from April 2010-2013.

“On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Mike for his leadership and for his multiple stints of service to Restonians,” Farrell said.“We wish him and his family the very best and thank him for his many contributions to our community.”

To fill the vacant apartment owners seat, the board will send a call out for nominees, according to Farrell. The deadline for candidates to file their application is close of business on Oct. 12.

"Thereafter, the apartment owners will vote on the nominees who come forward," he said. "So, I encourage all of you who might want to serve in that capacity to give it serious thought and put together your application."

RA will accept nominations from the Category B members or their designee to fill the vacant board seat until 12 p.m., on Oct. 12. RA staff will inform the Category B members or their designees of the nominees and record their votes. Following a five-day voting period, staff will tabulate the votes and share the results with all the nominees. The nominee with the most votes will be seated at the board's next meeting on Oct. 26.
