Catalytic Converter Theft, Bicyclist Struck: Vienna Crime Report

The latest incidents in the weekly crime report included a juvenile on a bicycle who was struck in a crash.

VIENNA, VA — Vienna Police responded to a variety of incidents in the last week, including a juvenile bicyclist injured in a crash and catalytic converter theft.

The crash happened around 6:17 p.m. Wednesday at Windover Avenue and James Madison Drive. Police say a juvenile was riding a bicycle south from the sidewalk on James Madison Drive across Windover Avenue. A vehicle heading south on James Madison Drive turning left onto Windover Avenue collided with the bicycle. The bicyclist fell off the bike and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The vehicle driver received a summons for a failure to pay full time and attention charge.

The catalytic converter theft happened in the 100 block of Tapawingo Road SE between midnight on Sept. 12 and 5:10 a.m. on Sept. 13. There have been numerous catalytic converter thefts reported in past weeks in Vienna. Catalytic converter thefts have been on the rise around the U.S., as the value of metals contained in the devices has gone up. Fairfax County Police formed a catalytic converter theft task force in response to the increase in incidents.

Arrest – Petit Larceny 22-009157
200 Block Cedar Lane, SE
Between September 6 at 8:00 p.m. and September 7 at 12:00 p.m.

A resident reported that the year expiration stickers were stolen from his vehicle’s license plate. On September 8, MPO Reedy was investigating this case when he observed an improperly registered vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. It was determined that the driver stole the stickers from the resident’s vehicle and placed them on his girlfriend’s vehicle. MPO Reedy issued the driver, a 46-year-old man from Cedar Lane SE, Vienna, a summons charging Petit Larceny. He was released on his signature. The stolen property was returned to the owner.

Between September 11 at 5:00 p.m. and September 12 at 3:00 p.m.
A resident reported that someone rummaged through their unlocked vehicle. Nothing of value appeared to have been taken.
