VIENNA, VA — A new lane configuration is set to start around Wednesday on Interstate 66 near the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metro, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The eastbound I-66 lane shift between Nutley Street and Blake Lane will start in the early morning hours of Wednesday. VDOT says the two right lanes will be separated from the two left lanes by a barrier-enclosed work zone. Drivers should stay to the right if exiting at Nutley Street or the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU.

VDOT says the new lane configuration will remain for one month. The shift is due to construction activities in the center of the interstate for the I-66 Express Lanes project outside the Beltway.

There will be several lane and ramp closures to prepare for the traffic shift. On Tuesday night, three eastbound lanes will be closed between Blake Lane and Nutley Street from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday. Lanes will be open at 5 a.m.

The ramps from I-66 to Nutley Street and the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metro will be closed from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday. Traffic will be detoured to northbound I-495 and north to westbound Route 7/Leesburg Pike. Drivers should stay right to southbound I-495, exit to westbound I-66 and follow signs for Nutley Street.

The ramp from southbound Nutley Street to eastbound I-66 will also be closed from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday. Traffic will be detoured south on Nutley Street, stay left and make a u-turn at Route 29/Lee Highway onto northbound Nutley Street and exit onto eastbound I-66.

Work is weather dependent. The Express Lanes are scheduled to open on 22.5 miles of I-66 between the Capital Beltway and University Boulevard in Gainesville.
