Overnight Closures Planned At I-66, 495 Interchange, 495 Express Lanes

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Overnight closures of a ramp and northbound Express Lanes are planned this weekend at the Interstate 66 and 495 interchange, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The closures are due to road work for the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project, which will add Express Lanes on 22.5 miles between the I-495 and University Boulevard in Gainesville. According to VDOT, crews will be installing bridge beams at the I-66/495 interchange to widen the ramp for connections from the future Express Lanes. The interchange will have several new ramps and connections to and from the existing 495 Express Lanes, new I-66 Express Lanes and regular lanes.

From Saturday through Monday, the ramp from eastbound I-66 to northbound I-495 will be closed nightly. Hours for the ramp closure will be 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday night and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday and Monday nights.

Traffic will be detoured to southbound I-495, then drivers will exit at eastbound Route 50/Arlington Boulevard, stay to the right to Fairview Park and take the left fork to northbound Fairview Park. At the traffic signal, drivers will bear left then stay to the right following signs to northbound I-495.

In addition, the northbound Express Lanes will be closed from the Robinson Terminal (the beginning of the express lanes in Springfield) to I-66. Closures will happen 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday and Monday.

The I-66 Express Lanes are on track to open in December 2022.
