Worker Injured When Crane Overturns In I-66 Work Zone

An overturned crane in a work zone caused delays, and the crane operator was treated on scene for injury.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — An overturned crane in a work zone caused delays on Interstate 66 Monday afternoon. The crane operator was injured but was not hospitalized.

The crane overturned in a work zone on westbound I-66 before Route 50 (Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway). NBC4's chopper footage showed the crane's extended arm may have prevented the vehicle from falling off the roadway. According to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, the crane operator was trapped and extricated.

The worker was checked out by EMS on the scene. There were no other injuries. The City of Fairfax fire department assisted with the response.

When the overturned crane was reported before noon, backups on I-66 followed.
