Route 7 Traffic Shift, Side Street Impacts Begin In Wolf Trap

VIENNA, VA — A traffic shift starts Tuesday in the Wolf Trap area as part of the Route 7 improvements project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Starting on or around Tuesday, Jan. 18, eastbound Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) will have a lane shift to the north toward the median between Lyons Street and Lewinsville Road. There will also be temporary closures of side streets at the intersection with Route 7. The traffic shift had been rescheduled from Jan. 11 to Jan. 18.

The two side street closures include Stokley Way and Trap Road at Route 7. Stokley Way will be closed at Route 7 through late 2022. For access between Route 7 and Stokley Way, drivers can turn onto Beulah Road from Route 7, left onto Atwood Road and continue onto Robnel Place. Atwood Road is already temporarily closed at the Route 7 intersection.

Trap Road will also be closed at the Route 7 intersection through late 2022. Drivers can use Towlston Road to access Trap Road. See maps of detour routes here.

Homes, businesses and other facilities remain accessible, according to VDOT. Drivers are reminded that the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph in active work zones on Route 7 between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive. VDOT asks drivers to be aware of any work zone signs, flaggers, traffic shifts and slow-moving vehicles.

The Route 7 improvement project focuses on seven miles between Reston Avenue and Jarrett Valley Drive. The project will widen the road from four to six lanes, add 10-foot wide shared-use paths on both sides, and other improvements along the corridor. The estimated completion date for construction is summer 2024.
