PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — Two people were killed Sunday morning on Interstate 95 after a driver led an officer on a chase in Prince William County, police said.

Police identified the dead as Curtis Armstead Jr., 24, and Miquel D. Jenkins, 23, both of Fredericksburg.

Virginia State Police said Armstead was driving a Dodge Charger with Jenkins in the passenger seat and was clocked by a trooper going 72 mph in a 55 mph zone on Interstate 495 at about 3:45 a.m. The trooper tried to pull Armstead over, but he sped off and continued to Interstate 95 south, police said.

Police said Armstead took the Exit 160 ramp for Route 123 at a high rate of speed and lost control, veering off the right side of the road and crashing into a concrete wall. The vehicle rode up the wall and hit the bottom of the overpass for the express lanes, catching fire.

"Troopers ran to the Dodge and pulled the driver and passenger from the vehicle just before it became engulfed in flames," state police Public Relations Director Corinne N. Geller said in a statement.
