Candle Spreads Fire Onto Mattress At Montclair Home

Prince William County Fire and Rescue cautioned residents about candle use after a house fire that displaced two people.

MONTCLAIR, VA — A candle caused a fire to ignite on a mattress inside a Montclair home Sunday, according to Prince William County Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters responded to a house in the 15200 block of Larkspur Lane late Sunday evening. Units found heavy smoke conditions on the second floor and quickly extinguished the fire. The home's two occupants had evacuated before the fire department arrived. No injuries were reported.

Two residents were displaced, as the county's building official deemed the home unsafe to occupy. The residents are receiving Red Cross assistance.

The fire marshal determined a candle that fell onto a mattress caused the fire. The fire department cautioned residents about using an open flame near combustible materials.

  • Never positioned a candle where it can be easily disturbed or knocked over.
  • Keep the candle at least 3 feet from any combustible material.
  • Ensure the candle is secured in a sturdy holder where the flame is contained and protected.
  • Monitor children and pets in the area of any burning candle.
