DALE CITY, VA — Improper disposal of fireworks led to a fire that spread to neighboring homes in Dale City last Friday, according to Prince William County Fire and Rescue.

The fire was reported around 12:40 p.m. the day after Fourth of July in the 14400 block of Brentwood Court. After a 911 caller reported a townhouse on fire, units responded to quickly put out the fire and its extension into adjoining townhouses.

All residents of the home safely evacuated before the fire department arrived. There were no injuries.

Three homes were damaged by the fire. Seven adults and three children were displaced, and the Red Cross is providing assistance.

The fire marshal's office said the cause of the blaze was improper disposal of fireworks in a combustible trash receptacle in a storage shed. Fire officials urge residents to make sure fireworks are completely extinguished before placing them in a combustible container. Used fireworks should be hosed down or submerged in a bucket of water. Residents should avoid putting used fireworks in a trash container inside or next to their home, according to the fire department.
