May 9, 2022, Prince William County, Va.—Pink Space Theory, a local non-profit dedicated to providing STEAM exposure to underserved Prince William County girls, was recently awarded a grant by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to continue its mission through its G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program.
“We are pleased to partner with the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to continue the G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program in Prince William County schools,” says Pink Space Theory Founder and President Monica Nichols. “The program is essential because there continues to be a lack of women in STEM careers in our country. Through this program and support from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, we aim to energize and inspire more girls to see that there is no limit to what they can achieve.”
Pink Space Theory was awarded $17,344 to support its work in closing gender and equity gaps in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) education by providing under-represented youth unique STEAM learning experiences.

The organization’s G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program supports girls from disadvantaged schools in Prince William County, Va., via a six-month, after-school gifted math enrichment curriculum that teaches higher-level math skills critical for STEAM careers.
The program’s acronym stands for “Girls who are Responsible for their thoughts, Excited about learning new things, and not afraid to Ask questions and Take risks.”

The G.R.E.A.T. Math Minds program will host up to 20 girls in 4th grade at Neabsco and Dale City elementary schools. The program will target 4th graders who participated in the program as 3rd graders during the 2021-2022 school year. The goal is to have students participate in the program starting in grade 3 up through grade 6. The program runs from October to May.
Another key component of the program is monthly STEAM speakers, culled from women in STEAM careers at local corporations such as MICRON Technology, MITRE, Truist, NOVEC, and Dominion Energy, who are invited to share their STEAM stories and lead an activity that highlights how their education and profession relate to real-world applications.
