Motorcyclist Killed In Dumfries Hit-And-Run, Other Driver In Custody

Police say a who left the scene of a fatal crash with a motorcycle in Dumfries has turned himself in.

DUMFRIES, VA — A motorcyclist died in a hit-and-run crash with a pickup truck Wednesday night in Dumfries, according to Prince William County Police. The truck driver is in custody.

The crash happened around 10:19 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Richmond Highway and Pine Bluff Road in Dumfries. Police say a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 400R motorcycle was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway at a high speed when a northbound 2020 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck collided with it at the Pine Bluff Drive intersection.

The crash caused the motorcyclist to be thrown from the vehicle. The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. He was identified as Joseph Emmanuel Word, 20, of Dumfries.

Police investigation found the truck driver failed to yield the right of way to the motorcycle before entering the intersection. According to police, the pickup truck driver left the scene, but the vehicle was later found unoccupied by a business nearby. The suspect was not found by a police search with a K-9 unit.

On Saturday, police obtained arrest warrants for the driver, Michael Eugene Dyer Jr., 34, of Woodbridge. He turned himself in on Monday.

Dyer is charged with felony hit & run, failure to yield, and driving without a license. He is being held without bond. A court date is pending.
