1 WA College Student Dead, 2 Injured In Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Earlier in the day, a contractor working on campus responded to carbon monoxide alarms at student housing, officials said.

OLYMPIA, WA – One Evergreen State College student is dead and at least two others are injured in what officials believe was a carbon monoxide poisoning in student housing Monday, the school said in a news release Tuesday.

After a student residence manager was unable to contact the students Monday evening, they called campus police, which broke down the door to the students' home around 8:30 p.m., school officials said.

The Evergreen police officer performed emergency CPR on at least one of the students, according to the school. Two students were taken to the hospital, and the officer himself was also hospitalized but released Tuesday morning, according to Evergreen Police Chief David Brunckhurst.

Earlier in the day, a contractor working on campus in an area of housing called the Modular Apartments had responded to carbon monoxide alarms, according to campus officials.

McLane Black Lake Fire Department arrived at the scene to conduct carbon monoxide testing, officials said. Later Monday evening, campus officials contacted all Evergreen students in nearby campus housing to make sure they were safe.

The apparent poisoning is still under investigation, officials said.

"This is a tragedy, and we grieve for our students and families," Evergreen President John Carmichael said in the news release. "The safety of students, staff and faculty remain Evergreen’s top priority."
