University Place Shooting: 1 Injured, Suspect In Custody

Deputies say the suspect knocked on the victim's door, and opened fire as he answered.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA β€” One person is in the hospital and another is behind bars after a late-night shooting in University Place.

According to an update from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, 911 dispatchers received a call warning of a shooting in the 5600 block of Hannah Pierce Rd W.

Based on their following investigation, deputies say they believe the shooter, a 23-year-old man, had knocked at the door of an apartment. A 22-year-old man inside then walked to the door, at which point the suspect shot through the door several times, severely injuring the man inside.

Several deputies had been in the area investigating a different disturbance call, and were able to quickly find the victim outside his apartment and provide aid before he was rushed to the hospital. Later in the evening, Tacoma police were called to another disturbance call in their jurisdiction, where they found the 23-year-old shooting suspect, and took him into custody.

The suspect is being held in the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first degree assault. The victim, meanwhile, remains in the hospital. It is unclear if the two knew each other prior to the shooting.
