"A Child's Dream" Concert to Benefit Ukrainian Hospital

The Chamber Group of the Kyiv Classic Orchestra will take the audience through the richness and versatility of Ukrainian musical culture.

On Saturday, May 25th at Benaroya Hall, the Chamber Group of the Kyiv Classic Orchestra will take the audience through the richness and versatility of Ukrainian musical culture. Their music will fight the violent sounds of war with the whole kaleidoscope of Ukrainian musical traditions and diversity, reflecting the bright and colorful aspects of Ukrainian lives, identity, and culture. The music will be interspersed with tales from Ukraine’s current tragedy, the pain, the sorrow, the courage and tenacity and even the optimism in the face of cruelty as experienced by the musicians themselves and the beneficiaries of the concert, the children of Ukraine. The music will include folklore melodies, internationally recognized

Ukrainian classical pieces as well as recent modern and original compositions by young Ukrainian composers.

The program includes Seattle Symphony Associate Principal Cellist Meeka Quan DiLorenzo's performance of a world-famous Bach composition that exemplifies the solidarity of the American people with Ukrainians’ fight for freedom, democracy, and peace.

All proceeds and support will benefit the wounded children being treated at Ukraine’s largest Children Hospital, Ohmatdit.

Says Silke Johnstone of The Humanity Funds and Mary Ransdell, Exec. and Artistic Director of The Seattle Series: "Kyiv’s Children’s Hospital Ohmatdit has been at the forefront of involving Ukrainian artists in comprehensive treatment plans for the many children that have been injured in the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine. Their trained psychologists work in special rehabilitation programs, including weekly concerts and rehabilitation sessions during which girls and boys hear and play a variety of instruments. These sessions allow psychologists to observe each child and address trauma through life-affirming experience.

Given the critical situation of this war, and inspired by the involvement of artists in the psychosocial programs of The Humanity Funds’ partners in Ukraine, including Save Ukraine, Voices of Children, and the iconic Children’s Hospital Ohmatdit, The Humanity Funds and The Seattle Series reached out to Seattle Symphony and Benaroya Hall President & CEO Krishna Thiagarajan. We talked about the power of music, the need to preserve and make known the beauty of Ukraine's musical traditions, and the unwavering support that Seattle and its communities have shown for the Ukrainian people.

The title of our Concert is A Child’s Dream, because a child’s dream is a dream of peace. The net proceeds of this Second Seattle Benefit Concert for Ukraine will support Ohmatdit Children’s Hospital and its center of excellence for war injured children. May they be resilient to survive this war and build a better future for themselves, their country, and ours."
