Eastbound I-90 Closure Planned Friday Night

Drivers with late trips planned heading east from Seattle will need to use an alternate route as routine maintenance work gets underway.

SEATTLE — Drivers with late-night trips heading east from Seattle will need to find an alternate route to Interstate 90 as routine maintenance work gets underway in the tunnels. Washington State Department of Transportation crews will close eastbound lanes between Seattle and Mercer Island at 11 p.m. Friday, along with the I-5 and Rainier Avenue South ramps.

The closure will allow crews to complete regularly scheduled work inside the tunnels, including safety inspections, light replacements and other improvements. Work in the westbound lanes is scheduled for the spring.

  • From 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, until 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, all lanes on eastbound I-90 between the I-5 interchange (milepost 2) in Seattle and the Island Crest Way (milepost 7) on-ramp on Mercer Island will close.
  • Eastbound I-90 on-ramp closures include from northbound and southbound I-5 as well as from northbound and southbound Rainier Avenue South.
  • Traffic joining eastbound I-90 from 4th Avenue South and Edgar Martinez Drive South during the closure hours will be forced to exit either to northbound or southbound I-5.

Drovers traveling to Mercer Island or onto the Eastside will need to use another route, like State Route 520 or Interstate 5 to 405.
