SEATTLE — Forbes analyzed the fortunes of the country’s richest people to identify each state’s wealthiest person. This is the magazine’s fifth edition of the list.

Washington’s (and the world's) richest resident is Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of e-commerce giant Amazon who is worth $157 billion, according to Forbes.

While Bezos' personal net worth will take a slight hit after his highly public divorce from MacKenzie Bezos (née Tuttle) in July, he will still remain the wealthiest person on the planet as not only the owner of Amazon but also Blue Origin, which Forbes describes as "an aerospace company that is developing a rocket for commercial use."

Bezos reportedly founded Amazon in 1994, creating the company out of his Seattle garage, before meeting Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, when he opted to invest $250,000 in the search engine startup.

According to Forbes, Amazon reported a gain of $230 billion in revenue for 2018, which included $10 billion in net profit — $3 billion more than 2017. In October 2018, Bezos was worth a reported $160 billion.

The net worth of the individuals on the list varies. For example, Bezos is only slightly worth more than the other richest person on the planet, Bill Gates, who is worth $102 billion on his own. But in other states, the richest people only had a nine-figure net worth, Forbes writes.

Collectively, the wealthy on the Forbes list had a net worth of $875 billion, which the magazine says set a new record.
