SEATTLE — More than seven hundred workers employed by Meta in Puget Sound will be out of a job in the year as part of a sweeping round of layoffs announced by Facebook's parent company last week.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced layoffs last week impacting 11,000 employees, 13 percent of the company's workforce, citing rising costs and declining earnings. As CNBC reported, Meta has spent more than $9.4 billion on the "metaverse" so far this year, betting big on a virtual reality plan that continues to shed cash.

Washington's Employment Security Department on Monday announced the cuts would eliminate 419 jobs in Seattle and 307 jobs in Bellevue, where the company just last month opened a new campus in the city's Spring District. The departures are scheduled for mid-January.

The Meta layoffs come amid other local layoffs announced by Twitter and Redfin in recent weeks. Amazon, Washington's largest employer, on Monday said it planned to cut roughly 10,000 corporate and technology jobs across its workforce in the coming weeks.
