SEATTLE — After a few flakes graced Western Washington on Wednesday, chilly but mostly sunny weather is in the forecast to close out the workweek before more snow returns to the forecast for the weekend.

Most areas will wake up with morning temperatures in the teens to low 20s Thursday and Friday, with wind chills potentially hitting single digits for portions of the East Puget Sound lowlands and Whatcom County.

Afternoon highs around Seattle look unlikely to break out of the 30s until Saturday. The National Weather Service expects the coldest overnight temperatures Thursday, hitting the low 20s in Seattle.

Despite the chill, Thursday and Friday look sunny before the clouds return for the weekend, providing another shot for some lowland snow lasting into early next week.

"Saturday sees the next frontal system approach the area, although not likely making its way inland until late Saturday afternoon/early Saturday evening," NWS Seattle wrote Wednesday. "Forecast problem here is that the current cold air mass will remain in place at that time, meaning any precip would fall as snow, even in the lowlands. Both ensembles and deterministic models have been trending in this direction for at least the last 36 hours and such consistency is lending more and more confidence in the forecast."

Forecasters said it was still a little too early to share specific expectations, but the models continue to show a growing chance for lowland snow Saturday night into Sunday morning, with most areas seeing less than 2 inches.

Another system could bring another rain/snow mix Sunday evening into Monday, with the potential for more chances next week as overnight lows stick around freezing.
