Richard Rooney M.D, on Planning a Summer Family Vacation

Richard Rooney M.D shares insight into the best ways to go about planning a family vacation this summer.

Taking a vacation with your family is an exciting time. You get to enjoy the company of each other while making new memories that you can carry with you as time goes on. Before getting your trip started, there are a few ways you can go about planning a trip that the entire family will enjoy.

Get Everyone Involved
A fun way to start your vacation planning is taking everyone's opinions into consideration. While it might be easy for the adults to pick the destination, it could be fun to include the kids, and see where they want to venture to. As a family, find a few places where you would think everyone might want to visit, and let everyone vote on where they would like to take a vacation. When kids feel like they are a part of the planning process, they will usually be more excited once you reach the destination. You can also let your kids help in choosing some of the activities that you do on your vacation, such as going to an amusement park or a museum.

Budget
Set a budget for the vacation that you can comfortably take. If you leave home without a clear plan in place of how much money you can spend without getting behind on your monthly payments, then it can be easy to spend much more than you have available. Avoid using credit cards when possible because this can quickly mean owing more money than you have and can sometimes be hard to pay back. Your budget should include everything that you plan to do while on vacation along with emergency money in case something happens while you're on the road or if you find that you need more money for food or other items.

Make A Plan
When you've narrowed down the timeframe of when you want to go on vacation, try to book your hotel room and other things that you know you will need reservations for as soon as possible. Sometimes, hotels will offer discounts if you pay in advance. You should also consider bundling services to get a lower rate, such as a car rental and air transportation or a car rental and a hotel room. Another benefit of planning early is that you can think about the activities that you want to do and save money for a longer time. Avoid trying to do too much while you're on vacation because it's supposed to be a time when you enjoy relaxing and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
