SEATTLE — A student died Tuesday morning after a shooting at Ingraham High School in Seattle's Haller Lake neighborhood, according to police and district officials. The Seattle Police Department confirmed a shooting inside the school just after 10 a.m., and officers continued to search for a suspect in the area for the next hour.

Police confirmed on social media that the school campus was secured and designated a reunification site for families at North 135th Street and Meridian Avenue North.

During a brief news conference at 11 a.m., Seattle police chief Adrian Diaz confirmed officers had successfully taken a suspect into custody a few minutes prior.

In an afternoon briefing, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell confirmed a student was killed in the shooting. Seattle Public Schools superintendent Brent Jones said it did not appear that the shooter chose his victim at random.

"An Ingraham High School student was shot and killed this morning on campus in what was believed to be a targeted attack," Jones said. "We have no reason to believe this was part of a bigger plan."

The police chief said officers arrived at the school within four minutes and immediately entered the building and began CPR on the student, with Seattle Fire medics not far behind. Within an hour, the police department's harbor unit located the suspect and arrested him with assistance from the King County Sheriff's Office.

"I want to say such a huge thank you to all the firefighters and officers that went to respond to the scene and handle this tragedy," Diaz said. "They're going out ... and putting their life on the line to try and make sure that school was safe."

In a notice posted online, the district said all after-school activities would be canceled Tuesday, along with all classes Wednesday. All students were scheduled for release at noon.

Further details on the student who was killed, the suspect, and the specific circumstances of the shooting were not immediately released.
