SEATTLE — Woodland Park Zoo is inviting Puget Sound gardeners to take a trip to Seattle and pick up some "Zoo Doo," an aromatic and nutrient-filled compost blend crafted from droppings graciously donated by the zoo's residents, from tapirs and mountain goats to hippos, giraffes and zebras.

The Zoo Doo promotion is nearing its 40th anniversary this year, and financial support from the Sunderland Foundation and Microsoft helped Woodland Park scale up the program to churn out the unique compost all year long.

"Zoo Doo is a great way to garden clean and healthy for the benefit of pollinators and other local wildlife and is a sustainable green choice," the zoo wrote in a news release. "The compost is so extraordinary that the zoo’s horticulture experts also use it throughout the zoo in its award-winning animal habitats and other landscaped areas."

The zoo is accepting bulk pre-orders for pickup Saturday, Sept. 17. Pricing starts at $15 for 25 gallons of compost. For $120, the zoo will provide 550 gallons of Zoo Doo — enough to fill a large truck. Residents who need a little more time will have another chance to schedule pickups next month, on Oct. 15. For those whose yards require less volume, pints of Zoo Doo and Worm Doo are available to order online.
