New Banners Along Aurora Ave in Shoreline Will Feature Local Art

Local artists contribute work that includes references to Puget Sound, a local landmark, and cultural diversity.

SHORELINE, WA - Shoreline residents will see new banners go up along Aurora Avenue this week featuring art created by two local artists.

Seventy-six new banners will replace old banners hanging along the first and second miles of Aurora in Shoreline. New banners will also go up along the third mile of Aurora and along Midvale Avenue North.

The Shoreline Public Art Committee chose work by local artists Susan Lally-Chiu and Amanda Drewniak. The banners were funded by the Aurora project’s 1% for art requirement.

Drewniak’s contribution depicts an octopus, a reference to Shoreline’s location along Puget Sound. Lally-Chiu created a banner featuring fruits and vegetables to highlight the Shoreline Farmer’s Market. She also created a banner depicting Shoreline’s cultural diversity.

“In my design, I wanted to reflect the beautiful nature and the cultural diversity of Shoreline,” Lally-Chiu said in a press release. “The panel on the left shows a pattern for water, earth/land (African pattern), trees (Hawaiian quilt pattern), mountains (Northwest Indian basket pattern), birds (Mexican art) and sun (Chinese lotus pattern) to reflect our cultural diversity with shapes symbolic of nature.”
