2 Mass Mailings Planned Ahead Of Wisconsin Fall Election

Wisconsin officials are mailing postcards to non-registered voters, and then 2.7 million mailers to registered voters by September.

Wisconsin's last statewide election, held in April, saw a record 964,433 voters cast ballots by mail. That represented 62 percent of all voters.

MADISON, WI – Wisconsin officials are mailing postcards this week to nearly 200,000 state residents who appear to be eligible to vote, but are not currently registered. That mailing will be on top of the 2.7 mailers that will be sent to registered voters in September.

The postcards will tell potential voters how to register online, and give them deadlines and other information about ways to register for upcoming elections.

The next statewide election in Wisconsin is the Aug. 11 partisan primary. The general election is Nov. 3.

Wisconsin sent similar postcard mailings to 1.28 million eligible but unregistered residents in 2016 and 384,000 residents in 2018.

State officials said the system isn't going to be perfect, and that some registered voters may inadvertently receive postcards. This can happen when a registered voter’s record does not match the same person’s DOT data, officials said.

"Registered voters who may receive postcards should not worry that their registration is in jeopardy," Meagan Wolfe, administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission in a statement.

Mass-Mailing To Registered Voters In September

In early September, 2.7 million Wisconsin registered voters will get a mailing that will contain an absentee ballot request form, and a return envelope for those who do not have internet access.

Wisconsin's last statewide election, held in April, saw a record 964,433 voters cast ballots by mail. That represented 62 percent of all voters.

By The Numbers

Wisconsin has a voting-age population of 4,524,066 people, according to estimates by the state’s Demographic Services Center.

Of those, 3,395,382 people were actively registered to vote on June 1, 2020.
