1 Killed, 9 More Injured After Milwaukee Pursuit Ends In Crash: Cops

Police said the pursuit of a stolen car late Sunday night ended with a crash on Silver Spring that injured ten people, one of them fatally.

MILWAUKEE, WI β€” A 17-year-old is dead and nine others are injured after a car that drove off from a police pursuit crashed into another car near 68th Street and Silver Spring Drive late Sunday, according to police.

Police said they first tried to stop a stolen vehicle wanted in connection with an armed robbery near Hampton Avenue and 51st Street but the car drove off so officers engaged a pursuit. Amid the chase, the vehicle crashed into another car shortly before 11:30 p.m., police said.

Eight people inside the stolen vehicle were injured including two unknown women, a 15-year-old boy, a 16-year-old boy, two 17-year-old boys, and 18-year-old woman. A 17-year-old inside the car suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the crash, police said.

Inside the other vehicle were a 25-year-old woman and a 42-year-old woman who were also injured in the crash, police said.

Police said all who were injured were hospitalized, while charges against the people inside the stolen car are pending review from the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.

Police did not immediately detail what may have caused the crash, or how officers were immediately involved past their pursuit of the vehicle.

The Milwaukee Police Department's current policy on vehicle pursuits and operating vehicles during emergencies, Policy 660, holds that all personnel "shall exercise due regard for the safety of all persons. There are no assignments or tasks of such importance that they justify the reckless disregard of the member's safety or the safety of other persons. Members must be mindful of the balance between achieving the goals of law enforcement while maintaining the public’s safety."
