MADISON, WI — Activists in Wisconsin are planning to gather in Madison and in Hayward on Jan. 9 to send a “No War” message as part of a national day of grassroots action in opposition to escalation of war with Iran. The two rallies are part of 292 such demonstrations that will be happening in the U.S. on Thursday.

Organizers are partnering with MoveOn.org to stage Wisconsin's rally — just one of many similar rallies that will be held across the U.S. on Thursday.

"In the wake of the Trump administration’s reckless assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, and threats to escalate conflict, activists will urge restraint and that the United States avoid yet another unnecessary, costly war of choice in the Middle East," organizers at MoveOn said in a statement on Wednesday.

The nationwide rallies are being organized by a coalition of groups including About Face: Veterans Against the War, Indivisible, MoveOn, the National Iranian American Council, and Win Without War.

Demonstrators will gather in Madison's James Madison Park on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 4 p.m. to stage their rally.

"We will stand on the sidewalk at James Madison Park on E. Gorham St. at N. Blair St. on Thursday Jan. 9 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. We'll hold signs and flags, and wave to passersby. Bring your own signs and flags," organizer Linda K. wrote.

A second rally will be held in Hayward in northern Wisconsin in support of U.S. servicemen and women who suffer from PTSD.

"We must stand up for peace with Iran! The toll of our war with Iraq and Afghanistan is still being demonstrated with over 22 veteran suicides daily, as well as our Marines and troops who suffer from PTSD. As the mother of a marine infantry man, I stand for peace today. Please join me as together, with one voice, we stand for peace," organizer Osborne P. wrote Wednesday.

The group in Hayward will rally on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. at the corner of Highway 27 and Highway 63 in the public parking lot next door to the Chamber of Commerce in Hayward.
