Nearly $1M In DOT Funds Distributed To Wisconsin Communities

The money originates from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will distribute nearly $1,000,000 across five Wisconsin communities.

The money originates from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. The federal grant program aims to help cities improve road safety.

These communities, which applied for the funding, were awarded grants:

  • City of Beloit – $400,400 to develop a safe roads action plan and pilot temporary bike lanes
  • City of La Crosse – $160,000 to develop a safe roads action plan to prioritize projects that will lead "to safer and more equitable streets for all"
  • Milwaukee County DOT – $219,918 to pilot street safety upgrades, including portable speed bumps, high visibility crosswalks, and carry out studies to inform their upcoming action plans
  • Oneida Nation – $100,400 to prepare a plan to apply for an implementation grant
  • Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians – $105,000 to create comprehensive safety action plan on tribal roads

"We applaud U.S. DOT’s commitment to help make roads safer and save lives in Wisconsin through this grant program," Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson said in a news release.

"These federal discretionary grants can make a real difference in our state and we encourage Wisconsin communities to continue to apply for them."
