WISCONSIN — In the fallout of the U.S. Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade, abortions in Wisconsin became restricted under pre-existing law. But with the change, different forms of birth control are becoming more available in the Badger State such as vasectomies.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin announced they are now offering appointments for the procedure with the first appointments coming on Thursday. The procedure comes from a partnership with urologists from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and will be performed at the PPWI Water Street Health Center at 435 South Water Street.

Vasectomies, a form of birth control for men, cut off the supply of sperm by sealing the tubes that carry it, according to Mayo Clinic. While technically reversible, Mayo Clinic notes that vasectomies should be considered a permanent form of male birth control.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin noted their procedure is scalpel-free. The new offering will have two urologists to work with patient services at PPWI.

“Now more than ever, it is important to expand access to birth control options for men who are increasingly inquiring about and getting vasectomies after the U.S Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe,” said President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin Tanya Atkinson in a release. “Providing this extremely effective form of birth control is aligned with our mission and commitment to providing family planning and reproductive health care to all who need us, no matter what.”

People who are interested in vasectomy services at Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin can book a consultation through 1-844-493-1052.

“Patients seeking vasectomy services may not regularly visit a primary care physician – let alone a urologist – and, thus, may have difficulty accessing this type of care. Planned Parenthood has long been a resource in the community when it comes to contraceptive care. We're proud to partner with them to increase access to this procedure for local patients seeking reproductive care,” said Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Urology at the Medical College of Wisconsin Dr. Jay Sandlow in the release.
