'Mistake' Wells Fargo Letter Says Thousands of Homeowners Owe Back Taxes

Franklin, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Wauwatosa and Milwaukee residents got a scare this week after Wells Fargo sent them letters by mistake.

WAUWATOSA -- Residents in Franklin, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Wauwatosa and Milwaukee got a scare this week after Wells Fargo sent them tax letters by mistake.

According to a WTMJ report, Wells Fargo sent approximately 3,300 letters out to area residents stating they had delinquent real estate taxes.

Wauwatosa Residents are being reassured by their local government, as Wauwatosa officials sent out a public notice about the erroneous letters, and how to check to make sure property taxes are, in fact, up-to-date.

WTMJ did some legwork this week, and obtained a statement Wells Fargo sent out to these home owners reassuring them it was all just a big mistake:

"Approximately 3,300 customers in Dunn and Milwaukee Counties were incorrectly notified that their real estate taxes were delinquent. We are in the process of reaching out to these customers and have also contacted the local taxing authorities in Dunn and Milwaukee Counties to alert them of the error. We apologize for any confusion this situation may have caused and urge customers who may have questions to contact us directly at 1-866-234-8271."
