Pilgrim Lutheran Children To Get Extra Warmth This Winter

A Brookfield boutique pitched in to help 200 children in need of extra help this winter to stay warm. Here's how:

WAUWATOSA, WI -- More than 200 children at Pilgrim Lutheran School will receive brand-new winter coats, thanks to a partnership between nonprofit Operation Warm and Brookfield-based boutique Altar'd State, school officials said Monday.

All students will receive a free coat during a special event to be held at the school on Oct. 23. Officials say that Altar'd State helped to cover the cost of the coats, which will be handed out to children who are between four and 14 years old.

During Tuesday's events, grown-ups will help students pick out a warm coat in a color they like, while volunteers will ensure a proper fit.

"Many of the students at Pilgrim Lutheran School come from low-income families who may be unable to provide warm-weather gear for their children. This donation of coats ensures these students will have opportunities to play outside during cold winter days and will be protected from the elements on the walk to and from school," school officials said.

Pilgrim Lutheran School opened in 1932, and after a long history of serving children, closed in 2008 due to declining enrollment. In 2012, Pilgrim Lutheran re-opened, joining the network of LUMIN Schools in offering a Christian education to urban populations. Pilgrim Lutheran School is a member of the Milwaukee Parental School Choice Program.
