WAUWATOSA — More students will be able to be active in their virtual classrooms this fall, thanks to a $30,000 one-time gift from the Education Foundation of Wauwatosa (EFW).

The money, which coincides with EFW’s 30th anniversary, will be officially presented to the Wauwatosa School Board at its next meeting, but in reality, is to be spent immediately on new Chromebooks that will be loaned to students districtwide for use during 2020-2021.

There is a need for additional Chromebooks now that the district is moving to a system of remote learning where students need digital access on a daily basis. Because there weren’t enough, several students did not receive tech tools when schools closed last spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The EFW Board wanted to step up in a meaningful way during these uncertain times and support the district in a way it hasn’t before,” says LaShonda Hill, president. “We believe this donation is a powerful example of our mission. Getting this technology into the hands of more students is imperative to their education. We believe it will impact and inspire them to stay motivated while they learn-at-home again this semester.”

This gift wouldn’t be possible without 30 years of support from the district’s families and friends who’ve donated to the EFW’s annual giving campaign or participated in its annual events: the EFW Rush for Education and the Black & White Gala. A portion of the money raised every year, recently as much as $70,000, is used to fund grants for teachers during the next school year.

“Our gift of $30,000 is in recognition of our 30 years of existence committed to enriching the learning experience of K-12 students in all district schools,” says Hill. “It does not affect this year’s grant funding.”
