NORTH WILDWOOD — Cabanas and large umbrellas are set to make their return to beaches just in time for July Fourth weekend.
They had been banned as a way to conserve space on the beaches in the wake of the severe erosion the city had been facing ahead of an emergency beach replenishment project that was recently completed.
The project, which was classified as an emergency by Gov. Phil Murphy in May, took 70 days to complete from the declaration being made to the last of the sand being pumped.
“It’s 200 feet of beach that just wasn’t there before,” said state Sen. Michael Testa, R-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic.
Testa visited the North Wildwood Beach Patrol headquarters Wednesday afternoon to view the completed replenishment project.
The senator had helped organize the emergency project with the Governor’s Office. Testa, who used to be a Wildwood lifeguard, was especially concerned about beachside businesses and properties that might have water encroaching on their homes.

“If the Wildwoods didn’t have a summer, things would be hamstrung for a long time,” Testa said.
Prior to the replenishment project, the water would push past the bulkhead in front of the lifeguard headquarters during each high tide, Beach Patrol Chief Bill Ciavarelli said.
In North Wildwood, officials say they got everything they wanted from an emergency state project to rebuild badly eroded beaches before the July 4 holiday. Mayor Pat Rosenello said the work saved summer.
After the project, the bulkhead is almost entirely covered by sand, giving beachgoers a dune bridge to cross to get to the beach at 15th Avenue.
“In my 21 years working for the city, there is no close second to how happy people are about the project being done,” Mayor Patrick Rosenello said.
Just prior to the project’s completion in late June, the city had to close eight beaches to allow the construction to continue as planned.
Ciavarelli likened the situation to the COVID-19 pandemic as far as not knowing whether he would be able to staff the beaches had the emergency replenishment not happened.
“The fact that we might not have a beach started getting around ... we were calling lifeguards to see if they were available and took it day by day until Mayor Rosenello called me and delivered the good news,” Ciavarelli said.
After hearing that the project would be finished in time for July 4, Ciaverelli was able to fully staff the city’s beaches with 100 lifeguards, 14 of them rookies.
During the project, the Beach Patrol had only a single point of entry onto all of the city’s beaches, which made their job more difficult, Ciavarelli said. The project’s timing was convenient for the Beach Patrol, as their rookie training program had ended the day after the project finished.
“July 4 may be the official start of summer, but for North Wildwood it was last Friday when the last of the equipment was removed,” Ciavarelli said.
Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, stood with local Republicans to check on a state beach replenishment project underway in North Wildwood, adding sand to the badly eroded beaches in time for summer.
Ciavarelli talked about being at Seventh Avenue during the final week of the project and taking a video on his phone as the last of the equipment was hauled away.
The $17 million project, which saw 750,000 cubic yards of sand pumped onto the beaches, is far from the first for North Wildwood.
Rosenello recalled just prior to taking office in January 2014 attending a meeting with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about replenishing the beaches.
For years, the city added sand at its own expense each winter, but eventually erosion got so bad the large trucks that carried sand from farther south in the Wildwoods could no longer pass the end of an amusement pier.
In the meantime, a federal beach replenishment project on the island, which includes Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and the Diamond Beach section of Lower Township, has been in the works for more than a decade.
Now that the emergency project has wrapped, any tent or cabana measuring less than 10 feet by 10 feet can be used on the beach.
“The state would go bankrupt with no beaches; the beaches are like an insurance policy for summer,” Rosenello said.
