The Drexel University women’s rowing team, which included five Atlantic County rowers, competed at the Henley Royal Regatta on Wednesday in Henley-on-Thames, England.
The Dragons’ varsity eight was defeated by G.S.R. Aegir of Netherlands in their first-round heat Wednesday afternoon. They were eliminated from the Island Challenge Cup.
The Dragons were the first team in program history to qualify at Henley.
The boat consisted of coxswain Chloe Speciale, stroke Taylor Powell (Holy Spirit High School), Kira Tracy (Ocean City), Julianna Rogers, Mollie Knoff (Holy Spirit), Ariana Townsend, Rita Keefer, Sarah Ghazaz (Absegami) and Kayla Driscoll (Holy Spirit).
Holy Spirit alumnus Paul Savell has been the Dragons’ director of rowing for 17 years. Up until last fall, he was the head men’s and women’s coach.
