Biography

Dr. Sukari Ivester is a Senior Professor of Practice in the Humanities and Social Sciences Program the Tulane University School of Professional Advancement. A faculty member at Tulane since 2020, her courses include Urban Inequality, Sociology of Travel and Tourism, Sociology of Gentrification, Comparative and International Political Economy, and Sociology of Brazil.

Dr. Ivester holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago, a Master of City and Regional Planning from the University of New Orleans, and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley. She has taught previously at the University of Chicago, the University of California, Berkeley, and California State University and has directed several faculty-led study abroad programs in Brazil.

Dr. Ivester’s research is inspired by the goal of creating more equitable communities. As a sociologist and urban planner, she seeks to improve the lives of marginalized and underserved people. She is passionate about how we can harness community-engaged scholarship and public policy to create a better future. Her recent work explores the social impacts of gentrification and displacement in Rio de Janeiro and San Francisco. Her current research focuses on the social implications of coastal planning for climate change in the Gulf parishes.

In her spare time, she enjoys volunteering at two local food banks, loves to salsa dance, does a good deal of yoga, is an avid traveler, stands up on paddleboards, is learning to blow glass and adores spending time with family and friends.
