The well-known Map My Ride+ app gives cyclists the core data they want both on the go and after a ride, but serious bicyclers might prefer a slightly more advanced app.

The iPhone app MapMyRide+ ($2.99) lets cyclists record their bicycle rides easily.

The MapMyRide+ app records GPS data of where you cycle, then shows you the map of your route, elevation graph (shown), average speed, total ride time, and more.

One feature worth pointing out is the time delay. If you don't want to record your ride until you've finished suiting up and tucked your iPhone into your pocket or bag, you can set the app to start after a defined amount of time.

The settings in MapMyRide+ are simple and self explanatory.

Splits (that is, splitting your ride into segments, wherein each segment contains its own stats that you can compare with the others) are supported, and you can set the split distance to any interval you choose.

A summary of your ride in the MapMyRide+ iPhone app shows duration, calories burned (if you have entered your height, weight, age, and sex), and average speed. Additional statistics include average and maximum speed and pace.

MapMyRide+, as well as other apps from the company MapMyFitness, have a social bent. Here, you can search for rides and workout routes that other users have completed.

While MapMyRide+ does contain a food logging component right in the app, the system isn't very thorough. For example, I was not able to enter half a banana, only whole bananas!
