Texas Longhorns 2024 Season Preview

After an impressive 2023 season in which the Texas Longhorns finished 12-2 and lost in the College Football Playoff, head coach Steve Sarkisian and quarterback Quinn Ewers have their sights set on a national title.

Of course, the Longhorns are also set to enter the SEC in 2024, so there will be new challenges on their path to the College Football Playoff.

Texas Longhorns Point Spreads

College football bettors have to know the details of a point spread bet , which is the single most popular type of wager in college football. Point spreads refer to the margin of victory that a favored team must overcome and the underdog must strive to maintain. After a 6-5-1 season against the spread (ATS) in 2023, Longhorns fans will be hoping for a slightly better 2024.

This example of a point spread should make things clear:

• Oklahoma Sooners (+2.5)
• Texas Longhorns (-2.5)

In the hypothetical game above, Texas is the favored team, as noted by the minus sign (-) next to its point spread; Oklahoma is the underdog, as noted by the plus sign (+). As 2.5-point favorites, Texas bettors would need to see the Longhorns win by three or more points for their bet to cash. Bets on Oklahoma would be winners if the Sooners won the game outright or lost by just a point or two.

Longhorns Moneylines

For bettors who don’t want the hassle of rooting for a team to win by a certain number, moneyline bets are straight-up wagers on which team will win the game. Like point spreads, the favorite is denoted by a minus sign (-) and the underdog a plus (+).

Reusing our example from earlier:

• Oklahoma Sooners +110
• Texas Longhorns -130

The numbers next to the +/- signs are the odds expressed in American format, which is best read as a math question where $100 is the answer. As -130 favorites, a bet on the Longhorns would require a $130 risk to win $100. As +110 underdogs, a $100 bet on the Sooners would win $110 if Oklahoma were to win.

Texas Longhorns Over/Unders aka Totals

Betting on the result of the game or margin of victory aren’t the only ways to bet on football games. Betting the over/under, sometimes called a total, is a wager on the combined number of points the two teams will score.

Let's say oddsmakers set the total for the Red River Rivalry at 64 points. Bettors who took the over would need to see 65 or more points to cash their tickets, whereas those who bet the under would want 63 points or fewer. If the two teams scored a total of 64 points exactly, all bets would be refunded.

Texas Longhorns Props

Bets that don’t fall neatly into the buckets mentioned above — moneylines, point spreads and totals — are often referred to as prop bets.

Prop bets can mostly be split into two categories. Player props are bets on a specific player's statistical output throughout the game. If you're a fan of fantasy football, these will feel very familiar. Examples of common player props would be a running back's rushing yards, a quarterback's passing yards or a certain player to score a touchdown.

Other prop bets are most often made on specific events throughout the game. Common examples include betting on which team will reach 21 points first, wagering on whether the first kickoff of the game will be a touchback, or taking heads or tails on the opening coin toss. Texas Longhorns Futures

Futures are a type of bet in which the outcome won’t be determined until after the season. Futures can be placed on a team’s overall performance throughout the season — for example, betting the Longhorns to go over their season win total or to qualify for the College Football Playoff.

But futures can also be bet on a player’s performance, both in terms of player props -- betting Ewers to throw for over his passing touchdowns total, for example -- and end-of-season awards, like winning the Maxwell or Heisman award.
