UCF Knights 2024 Season Preview

The UCF Knights head into the 2024 season with optimism for an even better second season in the Big 12.

Last season, the Knights regressed to their first losing campaign since 2016. However, their six regular season victories enabled them to qualify for the Gasparilla Bowl, which they lost to Georgia Tech.

Head coach Gus Malzahn gained a significant offensive weapon in the transfer portal with the addition of former Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson. The redshirt senior started three seasons for the Razorbacks and has a dynamic skill set that should fit well with Malzahn’s scheme.

Kobe Hudson takes the reins as UCF’s No. 1 receiver now that Javon Baker is in the NFL. Hudson led the Knights with eight touchdown receptions while also catching 44 passes for 900 yards.

Running back RJ Harvey is coming off a season in which he posted the third-most rushing yards in program history (1,416).

Ted Roof is now the defensive coordinator as UCF aims to be more stout on that side of the ball. The Knights bolstered their defense with transfer additions such as Ole Miss cornerback Ladarius Tennison, Vanderbilt linebacker Ethan Barr and Cincinnati linebacker/safety Deshawn Pace.

Defensive tackles Lee Hunter and Ricky Barber are formidable forces up front. Defensive end Malachi Lawrence earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention last season.

Kicker Colton Boomer drilled a pair of 50+ yard attempts last season. 27-year-old Australian punter Mitch McCarthy and punt returner Xavier Townsend are the other special teams players of note.

Key games on the slate include a road contest at in-state rival Florida and the regular season finale vs. visiting Utah.
Utah, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State are the only teams with better 2024 Big 12 Championship odds. If the Knights play to their potential, they should be competitive in the conference and get back to another bowl.
