A story full of sacrifice, with short chapters and complex characters

A story full of sacrifice, with short chapters and complex characters
'Saint wanted to ask what it was like, to lose the thing that defined you. But perhaps she knew: it left you someone else.'This is a story full of sacrifice. Patch sacrifices his life to find Grace, and Saint sacrifices her life to set Patch free by journeying a different way to find Grace. But there are so many more sacrifices than this, even sad ones coming to light at the very end of the book from unexpected characters. This writing is quite different to what I'm used to and the chapters much shorter. I found it weird at first, but I soon adapted. After Patch's return, he discovers art and paints beautiful portraits of what he believes Grace to look like and of other missing girls. I could see them come to life in my head. I love how he saw in paint shades. The one thing I would have loved added to this book is an artist recreating those paintings to add to the pages.Even though this book has a standout plot, I can't help feeling that it's the characters who really make it what it is. I felt strong empathy for Saint, wanting her to find true happiness instead of putting it aside to do whatever she could to help Patch. A brave, strong, determined lady who deserved more. But even characters I thought I'd dislike I ended up loving. Misty, who I thought was going to be the popular mean girl, turned out to be anything but. Sammy, the drunk who has an air of only caring about himself has a big heart he doesn't like to show. Charlotte with a sharp and witty tongue who was just hiding her vulnerability and covering how she truly felt. By the end of the book, I really took to her and found many laugh-out-loud moments in her words. This book is truly a journey, one with many twists and emotional moments. And as with life, not everyone gets what they want or the life they deserve or dreamed to have. This feels like a love story between Patch and Saint, even if a very different one from what I would have wanted for them and a different sort of love to what Saint desires. I can't help wondering if that would have been different had Patch not been kidnapped.'The shrink they make me see, she taps her pencil and frowns at me. And she talks about how we construct our ideals out of our own past mistakes. And I wonder what exactly a mistake is. A thing we should not have done, right? But if learning is built on trial and error there can be no mistakes, only rungs on a ladder to someplace better.'

It’s hard to know what to say about this brilliant book that hasn’t already been said in all the other 5 star reviews.

Originally, I started listening to this on Audible and got just under half way through however, I gave up and decided to read the book from the start, I’m so glad I did.

Words fail me. This book is stunning, a definite must read. Beautifully written, an epic spanning 25 years. The characters come to life. Short chapters that gives you an excellent excuse late at night to read just one more.....or two or three!

It may break your luggage allowance, it might be the longest book you read this year but it will definitely break your heart (more than once) and it will become one of your most memorable and favourite reads.
Echoes of To Kill A Mockingbird, Shawshank Redemption, Anne of Green Gables, Where The Crawdads Sing and other literary greats, this is a mesmerising story of love, loyalty, trust and truth with show stopping sentences and impressively authentic dialogue. The characters and their relationships are nuanced and complex, navigating their way through breathtaking twists, revelations, changing truths and all the delicious details of an unsolved crime case spanning decades. I was going to highlight my favourite lines but it would have been all of them! Did I like it? Do I recommend it? Yeah 100%

Oh my goodness, this book
I’ve seen such a lot of love for this book on Twitter from authors and books reviewers that I follow and whose opinions I value. Although I did request it on NetGalley UK I think I must’ve got there rather late so ended up having to buy this book one of a few that I’ll buy this year
This is quite a remarkable novel one of the one of the favourites of my reading so far this year. It tells the story of a young boy in America who is abducted after he goes to the rescue of one of his school friends a girl who is being attacked. During his abduction he has kept in dark secluded place and meets a girl named Grace. Through the rest of his life he is searching for this girl. The story follows him as he investigates the story of missing girls throughout America meets their parents and although he soon realises that most are not his grace he nevertheless feels compelled to search for them.

I love the fact that as it was kept in the dark during his abduction he’s never seen the girl Grace he nethertheless developed a strong mental picture of what she looks like by how he touches her face. he develops an artistic ability which she discovers when he tries to draw his grace from memory. Subsequently he draws many of the other girls and becomes a renowned artist.
When I started to read the novel, I thought that his abduction was going to be the primary focus of the story however this only perhaps fills a fifth of the book his Odyssey to find his lost Grace is the remainder of the book
The author has a beautiful flowing pose style of poetic quality I was quickly immersed in the novel and really didn’t want to put it down. I was delighted discover it was quite a long novel as I was enjoying it so much.
I have read the author’s previous novel we begin at the end which I enjoyed but felt that this new novel is far more accomplished. this really is noble but I will remember for a very long time.
Although the subject matter of child abduction sexually abuse and abortion is covered within the novel this is done with sensitivity and a lightness of touch which does not distract from seriousness of the issues covered but allows the reader to not be too traumatised.
I would imagine that this book would make a fantastic film and would expect the rights to be taken up very quickly
I would highly recommend this novel for those who enjoy mix characterand story based novels particularly with strong emotional elements.
If you loved Demon copperhead by Barbarh Kingsolver then you’ll love this book the other novels that I felt it was similar to was The Lincoln Highway by Amore Towles
The book was published on the 25th of June 2024 by Orion publishing.

This review will appear on Goodreads and my book blog bionicSarahSbooks on .wordpress .

All the Colors of the Dark is a novel that has made it impossible for me to move on. The writing is so descriptive and detailed yet flows effortlessly and never drags. Every character is thoroughly developed; I already miss them and wonder what they are up to. That is how completely this gorgeous book pulls you in and never lets go. It has everything. Deep familial and romantic love, horrific crime, mystery, twists you won't see coming, humor, and humanity. This novel is a triumph, an ode to the human spirit, and literally my favorite read in decades.
