Hooked immediately. I read this in one day and I just couldn’t put it down. The storyline focuses on abusive relationships and how the main character manages to break free from it, while her mother never did. It’s heart wrenching and so difficult to read at times. My heart physically ached for her. Definitely worth a read. I immediately picked up book 2!

📚✨ Book Review: It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover ✨📚

This review has been the hardest for me yet, but I’ve settled on 3.5 stars for several reasons:

Easy Read: I stayed up a few nights, not wanting to put it down. Colleen Hoover's writing style is engaging and accessible, making it a breeze.

Lily and Atlas: The relationship between Lily and Atlas is beautifully crafted. Despite their sad circumstances, I was rooting for them all the way. Their bond is heartwarming and filled with hope amidst the turmoil.

Lily and Allysa: The friendship between Lily and Allysa is wonderful. It’s like the friend you always wanted—supportive, caring, and always there when you need them.

Emotional Rollercoaster: This book is a real emotional rollercoaster that tugs at your heartstrings. The raw emotions and difficult themes are sensibly portrayed, making you feel deeply for the characters.

Slow Build-Up: The story has a slow build-up and gets interesting about halfway through the book. While the pacing might deter some readers initially, the payoff is worth it once the story picks up.

Based on True Events: Knowing that this story is based on true events and reflects real experiences adds a layer of authenticity. It highlights the reality that no matter how much we want a happy ending, it doesn’t always happen for certain characters.

I'm looking forward to starting the second book - It Starts With Us and for the movie coming out in August!

This was the first book I read by Colleen Hoover and I can only blame myself for getting drawn in by the surge in popularity of this book, enough to make me pick up a copy.

I went into this book with a blind eye, not entirely sure what to expect. The book itself is advertised and sold as a ‘romance’ story, which is very misleading because it isn’t a traditional love story or even a romantic novel. No. It’s a story that depicts domestic violence, with Lily’s father abusing her mother throughout the entirety of her childhood and Lily finding herself in an abusive relationship with Ryle.

I strongly believe the novel should have incorporated a content warning outlining the themes and issues that are to be discussed in the book. With the book’s continuous growth in popularity across BookTok, there’s even more of a reason for this book to contain a content warning given that it’s likely being consumed by a younger audience and most especially, for people who may have unfortunately endured similar experiences. Although some may argue that content warnings spoil the nature of the storyline, I don’t believe this would have taken away the impact of the story. It would have instead prepared readers for a potentially difficult read. Right towards the end of the book, there is a note on who you can contact if you or someone you know is / has experienced issues discussed in the book which for me feels like a formality once you get through the entirety of the story.

I found a large number of the characters in It Ends With Us to be unoriginal and stereotypical. A woman named Lily Bloom who runs a florist? Groundbreaking. I also found it difficult to connect with the characters and because of that, I had little interest or patience in watching how the story develops, most especially in the first part of the novel. Yes I’m still yet to recover from Lily’s weird obsession with writing diary entries to Ellen Degeneres (of all people).

In terms of the writing style, I found it to be rushed. The book features a whole bunch of time jumps which I was not a huge fan of. It pulled me out of the story’s timeline too many times and this made me feel as though I were playing catch up or like Colleen Hoover was rushing to get somewhere else and cover another subject. I think more detail could have been added in certain parts too, for example, more of an insight could have been given into the journey and the challenging process of how Lily decided to forgive her abuser. Same with the ending of the book, I don’t think it makes much sense to leave the story where it was left. The consequences of Lily’s final and most important choice could have been explored in the final chapters.

One of the worst parts which I haven’t gotten round to discussing yet is the fact Colleen Hoover was planning on making a novel about a sensitive topic like domestic violence into something as light-hearted as a colouring book. I don’t even know where to begin with unpacking that.

This book should have trigger warnings in its blurb.
There is nothing to indicate what this story becomes. While it may be apparently based on the author’s own parents, I’m not convinced the core subject matter was written about in a respectful way.
It’s badly written, the author’s technique lacks in story flow. Hard hitting scenes come out of the blue and sometimes context is lacking.
I’m more perplexed by the popularity of this trash - why all the hype?! There are novels around this subject matter which are far superior to this one.
Another classic example of trash books, misleadingly overrated, being churned out for everyone’s viewing pleasure.
Books like these have the potential to generate so much more than they do - awareness of domestic abuse, support for victims and survivors, real depth when it comes to the story telling. This book failed in all of these things and more.
Really disappointing.

Didn’t enjoy the writing style, all the characters are very one-dimensional (everyone is exceptionally good-looking, successful, rich *roll eyes*) and the way the author treated the very serious topic of domestic violence felt frivolous. When I read the epilogue about this having been based on her mother’s experience, who never talked about it, it heightened the feeling that this book is based on exploiting other people’s trauma without understanding very much about it at all. Found this to be a deeply disappointing book.

Triggering and not a love story

As a domestic violence survivor I was shocked to see no trigger warning and the last time Ryle rapes his wife violently I had to stop reading. It’s incredibly important to let you all know how upsetting reading things like this even now after I got out of my violent relationship in 2022. I cannot for the life of me wonder why TikTok made this out to be a romance novel it’s not! It’s glorifying domestic abuse and I’m sorry to say it should absolutely not be made into a movie. This book needs to have trigger warnings added to it so people are aware what they’re reading beforehand.

Just absolute trash, but I wouldn’t mind so much if it wasn’t about an extremely sensitive and important subject matter (domestic violence).

*Spoilers ahead*

I mildly enjoyed Verity so tried this book. It’s written poorly, the characters are one-dimensional and completely unbelievable as real humans.
It was obviously poorly researched as well (some specific examples - if the author had ever looked up what a neurosurgeon does, she would know they haven’t touched a stethoscope since medical school, and you wouldn’t want to touch a doctor’s scrubs after they come home from work, let alone find it arousing, considering the reason you wear scrubs is because you regularly get every form of bodily fluid on them at work (: ).

I found the endorsement of domestic violence disturbing, and most of the book is frankly pretty sexist - the two main woman are a rich housewife, and a successful flower shop owner (who knew that was such an easy job - according to this book it’s a breeze), whereas the men are financial millionaires, surgeons, mayors and chefs. The women raise the babies while the men play poker and drink beer.
I also suspect there are strong pro-life overtones here (you accidentally get pregnant with a man who abuses you and there’s not even a flicker of consideration that you may not need to have this baby? Really?).

It’s like it was written in the nineties.
The decisions made by the protagonist are not what you would want any female loved one to make, and yet they are unchallenged by the character’s loved ones and apparently we are supposed to root for them? Bizarre.
