I was torn between this and another similar book telling the Hades and Persephone story and I’m so glad I picked this one. Firstly I’m in love with Hades, there I’ve said it. The writing is great along with a “both sides of the story” approach which keeps the pov interesting, it’s not just a repeat of the same parts of the story and actually keeps the book flowing which was great, the character progression for Persephone is also amazing.

However, the biggest tick for me was around the kink aspect of the book. Every other kink / BDSM book I have read clearly has no actual experience with the scene and just writes what they think it’s about, usually wrong and casts horrible shadows on everyone involved. The kink world is all about consent, respect, care and love and my god this book has it in spades! The scenes are extremely spicey but Hades is a true gentleman and is constantly maintaining consent with Persephone and his only goal is her happiness not to belittle or humiliate. Bravo Katiee and thank you for finally writing a kink based story that is actually true to real life!

I'm a massive lover of the Greek gods stories so after reading reviews I thought I'd love this, unfortunately I was wrong and it's not for me.

Be aware there is voyeurism, you're either into that or not but just FYI.

Likes:
- Persephone isn't weak, nor a virgin like they usually are in these sorts of stories. Nice to have a female lead who knows what she wants. Well done to the author.
- Hermes power and how it's used is clever, really liked how the author portrayed this.
-some of the sex scenes are good, not the best I've read but definitely passable.

Dislikes:
- Hades character. He is nothing like what Hades is known for. Whilst in the original tellings he falls for Persephone, he's still dark and ruthless. This guy literally spends him time playing with puppies.... Not dark enough for me. Was really looking forward to a book like this with a Hades spin on the character...... I was really disappointed. If you like sweet and selfless, this book has your guy.
-the plot is a bit meh, not very inventive with an anticlimactic ending

Overall I've given it a 2.5. It's readable but easy to put down and forget. It's also very expensive compared to other books of a similar nature and definitely not worth the £7+ paid.

So i bought this book thinking it was a retelling of Hades and Persephone but in a contemporary setting. I love the myth behind these characters so i was keen to see what could be done with them in a modern world.

I'll be honest, this wasn't really a re-telling. The characters were just named after the Greek Gods of Olympus.

Putting this aside, i did enjoy the story. It was an easy read, entertaining and enjoyable, I just don't believe it should be based off the story of Hades and Persephone.

Also if you like books with a lot of spice... read this. There was A LOT!

There was a lot of hype for this book on Bookstagram and Booktok so me and my friends decided to Buddy Read it. It's a modern urban retelling of Hades and Persephone and not fantasy based. The relationship development between Hades and Persephone was the best part about this book and, despite the reputation he has, he's a sweetheart with her. There is a lot of spice but it's very mainstream, bar a bit of voyeurism. I say this because the way it was setting it up at the start I assumed this was going to be like Fifty Shades of Grey with a playroom as well as how people on IG and TikTok were bigging it up as 'the spicest book they have ever read' so I was surprised after reading it. And with that description of Hades all I was picturing was Bucky Barnes in Endgame! The plot is barely there I mean it starts off with promise and then everything happens in like 10 pages at the end. But if you're looking for fluff and some spice then give the book a read - it's a very loose retelling and by that I mean only really the names are the same.

I enjoyed this book overall as a read. The storyline is good, and it tells a different type of story regarding Persephone and Hades. That's all I really liked about it.

There are a few grammatical errors, like missing commas and worlds in the wrong place. For example, the sentence will say her instead of him—only minor things. But if things like that bug you, then this is probably not the read for you.

The next thing is the whole take of it being a retelling of Persephone and Hades. The author could have called the two characters John and Jane, and you wouldn't know it was a retelling. The only things that do tell you are the names of the characters and the map of Olympus. The author makes slight references to the story of Persephone and Hades, e.g. pomegranates, Persephone only staying for the winter, the one reference to her being the queen of the underworld and Hades being shunned. But there is no fantasy within this book. THey're not gods with godly powers; they're humans with godlike names. That's it.

This not having the fantasy element took something away from this for me, and it made me question the point of having the whole Greek Gods element in the first place. The author should have just made up her own world because once you take the Greek mythology out of the book, it is just a romance book. That thought was the only thing that got me through the book. I had to think of it as not a retelling because it wasn't. It took all the danger and the premise of why Hades and Persephone were forbidden and why it was so strange for Hades to fall for someone like Persephone. It took all that out. I get the author was probably trying to make it her own, but she could have just made her own original story with her own original characters and ideas; after all, 70% of the book was that.

A good retelling for Hades and Persephone is A Touch of Darkness.

I don’t know what it was about this, but it all just felt a little bit off. The only thing making this a Hades and Persephone retelling is the use of the names. The “gods” are literally just a government office as far as I can tell, which left me feeling a little cheated to be honest. Don’t go into this expecting any kind of mythical elements or anything like that.

The spicy scenes left a little to be desired - there are quite a lot of them, and they are quite detailed, but there’s barely anything that actually happens, if that makes sense? It just felt a bit rinse and repeat.

This could have been so much more than what it was, and unfortunately I just felt like it missed the mark on a lot of fronts.

I bought both the kindle and audiobook versions, I found the narrators great for their own characters, but my god I absolutely cringed whenever they were speaking for the other person (like, when the female narrator was voicing for Hades during her scenes, the voice she used was pretty bad, and the same issue with the male narrator when reading Persephone’s lines during his scenes), and it kind of brought me out of the story a little bit.

Overall, this just feels like a bit of a middle of the road book, that fell below the expectations I had, and isn’t a book I’m likely to reread.

Persephone has a problem. A very big problem. She does a runner literally straight into Hades arms and offers home a proposition so she can finally be free of Olympus.....in 3 months.

Of course he takes it and what ensues is ermm...carnal, dramatic and actually quite beautiful. Hades is delish!

I got mixed feelings about this one though. I loved Hades. Hades is my mans and I will always love him in every retelling (same with Hermes, always top tier). I liked this version of Persephone! She wasn't the innocent victim like she usually is. BUT, this book was more smut than plot and I prefer my books with a little more plot. I was also expecting it would have to do with Greek mythology a little more. I didn't get the feeling they were gods, idk if that was the point or not but they seemed human. So yeah, it was an easy and somewhat enjoyable read but if it wasn't for Hades I would've DNF'ed.

3.5 Stars. I've been putting this off for a while because it's still so incredibly popular and I didn't want to get swept up in the hype. That said, while I didn't hate this, I didn't love it like I thought I would. It had all the tools to be a hit; KR signature flair, kink, diversity, greek myth and the beginnings of a series I'm probably going to love. But and it's a pretty big but; while it had all those things, they didn't give 100% of what I wanted them to give. Hades was so...nice. Nothing really happens and the Zeus stuff wraps up a little too clean for my liking. All in all, I'm underwhelmed. Will I check out Electric Idol? Probably. Am I weak for Ms. Roberts? Absolutely.
