Depending on your dog's lifestyle, you can expect to trim their nails every 2 to 4 weeks. If you hear your dog's nails tapping on the ground, it's time to trim them. Here are some pointers:

1. Always use nail clipper made for dogs.

2. Trim the nail, clipping only the tip above the quick to avoid blood vessels or nerves.

Note: White nails have a pink quick going from the base of the nail to near the tip and is easily visible. A black nail has a quick that is darker than the rest of the nail making it difficult to see.

3. If the quick is accidentally cut, the nail will start to bleed. Use Kwik Stop styptic to stop the bleeding.

4. Nails trimmed on a regular basis will have a receding quick making them easier to maintain.

Pain relief…mmmm?
I’m not sure if it actually relives pain or not bc, my dogs don’t really have much of a reaction one way or the other. I just hope that it does alleviate any pain they may have fm cutting their nails too short. It definitely works fast & easy. I wish there was a simpler way to apply the powder so, that the rest wouldn’t get contaminated & that I wouldn’t have to use my fingers/hand to apply it. Maybe a washable spoon/applicator as it can get messy & I often nd to use more bc, the dog jumps (skittish) fm being hurt. The powder seems to be odorless & wash off easily. I definitely recommend this kwik stop powder.

My dogs nails got very long due to him having a illness and no longer exercising and walking on pavement. I had a friend come over and clip his nails. I bought this styptic powder several months ago as a preventative measure for my two cats. Wasn't sure if I was ever going to use it, but turns out it is a lifesaver when you really need it! Today one of my indoor cats had a cut on her front paw and was tracking blood all around the house. If you know anything about cats they are very hard to work on, especially when in pain/irritated. I would recommend having someone else help. Best if one person holds the pet and the other applies the powder, but I was able to do it by myself though it was more difficult. I applied the styptic powder to a paper towel to prevent a mess and then forced my cat to step on it. She was not happy and made a weird growl/grugle sound for about a minute and tried to lick the powder off. *Sigh*. The styptic must have stung, but at least that's an indicator it's doing the job. The powder that remained on her paw did the trick and stopped the bleeding almost immediately. I still decided to take my cat to the vet just to make sure everything was ok and that there was no infection, but the styptic powder in the mean time made me feel assured that my cat was okay for the time being and wouldn't continue to track bloody pawprints around the house.
