3 Smart Steps for Endless Hot Water

ECO 36 Sizing

Step 1: Determining your average inlet water temperature is important, this allows you to determine how well your unit will perform in your desired location. A lower inlet water temperature will require a higher kilowatt product.

Step 2: Next you will determine how many applications your unit can run simultaneously at your chosen location inlet water temperature. Tankless electric water heaters are sized for maximum simultaneous use, not maximum fixtures in your home.

Step 3: Determining specifications and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit into your breaker panel.

4 years later - Caveats and ongoing maintenance

4 years later - Caveats and ongoing maintenance
I installed this water heater in 2018. I had to change the entire electrical service (outside panel) on my 1956 house to accommodate the new load. I now have a 200 amp service. And yes, all the lights in the house flicker when someone is in the shower even with the upgraded service. I suppose I’ve grown accused to the flickering. In a weird way it serves as a monitoring device to know wether your kids are in the shower like they’re supposed to be (I’ve got 4 teenagers). It heats the water well, endless supply - no complaints there. However, the heating elements will come apart over time with use (constant heating and cooling of the metal). In a traditional water heater it’s more of a constant “on”. So with this tankless unit the outside copper breaks down and comes apart exposing all the internal bits - which is the heating wire all wrapped in a porcelain type material. This material breaks away in little chunks and floats to each and every faucet in your house and begins to clog each aerator screen. This builds up to where you lose water pressure which is annoying but it gets to the point where the flow is so restricted that your hot water (via flow valve) won’t turn on. And thus your hot water heater becomes its own worst enemy. You then go through your entire house and take every single faucet and shower head apart to clean out all the debris that looks like little rocks. Before you discover this you will spend many nights of poor water pressure and cold showers scratching your head and wondering about all of it. You will think your pipes are coming apart (but all the galvanized has been replaced with PEX), you will think the city supply is contaminated, you will think the main line into your house needs to be replaced, your will install a whole-house water filter. And none of it will help.Eventually you’ll cut the (newly installed) power to the heater and take the heating elements out to find they are so corroded and broken that you can hardly wrangle them out of the heater at all. After the shock and disbelief wear off, you’ll flush out the heater, order new elements and replace them, and clean all the debris out of your faucets again. And voila, nice hot water again. This is your new semi-annual to annual routine for the convenience of endless hot water. For real, I’m ordering my 4th heating element and I’ve had the water heater for 4 years now. (It’s mostly the 1st element that breaks down because they are activated sequentially based on how much hot water is needed. The 1st element comes on each and every time so it breaks down much faster)This whole experience was cut-and-paste for a friend that installed the same water heater. He called me for help after he couldn’t figure it out. He literally had a contractor in his front yard giving him a bid to tear out and replace his main water line when I got there.I broke it all down for him… cut to the end… he replaced the water heater with a traditional one because he had tenants and needed an immediate fix.But hey… endless hot water. Or something.

This thing is super high quality! I was expecting a cross between an anvil and a hot water heater for the price. I was impressed the second I took it out of the box. I installed mine myself. I had some plumbing refits since I was going from a tank to tankless. The wiring was pretty strait forward, but these things do pull a ton of amps.

I installed mine and all the lights in the house flickered as the heater cores cycled. I had more than enough service to the house. There is a ton of stuff on the web about tankless waterheater doing this, not just EcoSmart. Somewhere outside my house in the power lines there is a loose neutral wire connector. You can forget getting the power company to chase the line and fix it. So now I am freaking out. I have plumbed and wired for this and now I am going to have to send it back and change everything for a tanked heater.....or so I thought.

I called EcoSmart and talked to Juan. I explained to him what was happening. He knew what it was doing and he explained to me that they can help. All I had to do was open the control box and move a jumper that slowed down the cycle. I took me longer to open the box than it did to fix it.

Now hot water all the time. I have turned on 5 sinks and 2 showers (with the outside temp of 34) just to see what the max I could use at one time. I could not tell a temperature difference with all in use.

Last, these things have a limited lifetime warranty.

I would recommend any EcoSmart product because of the customer service, the quality, ease of installation, and the lifetime warranty.

We had a 40 gallon tank heater fail, and this water heater was a fantastic replacement. We had a few plumbers bid the project, and this one came in $1,000 less expensive than most options we were looking at.

We did have to hire an electrician to run 4 new circuits, as this unit takes WAY more electricity than a traditional tank unit. But since the unit only runs while you are actively running hot water, it saves money on electricity overall, and gave us a full closet back in storage space. Super happy with this unit after a week.

The media could not be loaded.
I bought the unit in May 2023 for an addition I was planning to build onto my house. I didn't open the box or read the manual to learn that there is no warranty unless you register the product within 30 days of purchase until it was too late.

As soon as the unit was powered up it had problems with the motherboard. It would not turn on when the water started flowing. I had two master electricians and a master plumber troubleshoot the unit before calling customer service. Both electricians told me the power was good. They could get the unit to turn on by applying pressure to certain places on the control board or wires but it would become unresponsive after. Eventually it quit turning on completely. I reported the problem to customer service and they sent a replacement motherboard free of charge even though I had not registered the warranty.

With the new motherboard installed the unit works but will only power on 2 of the 4 heating elements. If the water flow exceeds 1.3gpm the unit returns an error code E5, which usually means the water flow is too high for the unit, but the unit should operate with as much as 6gpm at my incoming water temp of 67°F. I contacted customer support again and they cannot help me. They suggested purchasing a new flow sensor, which doesn't make sense because it is displaying the correct flow amount on the unit; the unit just thinks that 1.4+gpm is too much and will not kick on the other heating elements. All heating elements, thermistors, and the fuse have been checked by a master electrician according to the company's troubleshooting guide. They will not replace the unit because I didn't register the warranty in time. So the unit powers one shower but no more, and there doesn't seem to be a way to fix it.

Lesson learned. Make sure to register any appliance purchase within 30 days and be prepared for the spam emails to surge a bit after they sell your information to data farms.

This unit requires a lot of power to operate. 4 X 40 amp 240 volts (the double 40amp breakers). Wasn't hard to install but if you don't feel comfortable doing your own electrical, this is not the time to learn.. Hire a professional if you are in doubt. You need 8 slots in your panel. This unit will make your lights flicker but the draw is only during its use, unlike the regular hot water heater that is drawing power pretty much all the time. The system works great and no issues whatsoever.

Pattern Name: HeaterVerified Purchase
I purchased the '36kw' model and carefully followed the connection steps, being cautious with electricity. I connected the red wire to the red wire, black to black, and attached the ground wire. I tested each connection with a multimeter. However, when I turned the breaker on, I received error codes S103, H103, r446, P008, etc. Consequently, I returned the defective product, waited for a refund, and decided to take a chance on buying a second one. Unfortunately, it was the same story with the second unit. The box was open, and there was water in the element tube, indicating that it wasn't new but rather an open box with a defective product. I've decided not to try again and will instead pay more for a reliable brand, like Rheem, and purchase it from Home Depot. Yes they refund me, but I loose my time.
