I don’t write a lot of reviews but I think it’s tough to pick items like HF earplugs, so I hope this is helpful to others. I wore these for a concert in a small venue with some really loud sound and thumping bass and kick drums. I’ve tried about three other pairs of high fidelity earplugs in the past and these were easily the best. I think it started with the fit. I have bigger ear holes, but even when buying the larger sizes in other earplugs, I was always having to adjust them. I was a bit skeptical that these did not have flanged tips like most of them out there. The tips look like the most basic of the classic headphone tips, but they came in four different sizes, and the largest formed a good seal in my ear without being uncomfortable. The medium felt good, but when I tested them, it was clear some sound was coming in around the sides, because the difference with the large tips was very significant. I found that the loops stayed put in my ears and were pretty comfy/non-distracting.
The quality was not quite true sound, yet an improvement over the previous plugs I’ve tried. The music did not sound THAT much different. Oddly, the significant moderation of the kick drum and bass, amplified the feeling of thumping in my body but I adjusted to that. The vocals did not sound much different, but the mids, like guitar and some digital tones, like keyboards and sequencers, were a bit muted. Overall, the sound didn’t get muffled as much as other earplugs, even the HF one’s I’ve tried before, yet it felt like the mids were turned down. I was impressed with how much the crowd noise was turned down! Whenever I slipped the loops out, I didn’t notice that anything that felt a bit muffled sounded any different, so that had more to do with the acoustics, but I did notice how loud the crowd was. Ultimately, I found wearing these at the show to be a pleasant experience.
I think the look of these are interesting. Much better than ones that stick out of your ear with a pull tab. Clear or flesh colored might be nice, but again, i prefer the loop to the tab. It looks and feels better.
I knocked a star for a reason that’s been stated in other reviews. The case doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. It’s cheaper than the cool aluminum keychain, twist cap one’s you typically get. It’s plastic, with a plastic snap, and a thin jelly loop for attaching to a keychain or anything. It feels as if that loop could break easy AND that they case could open. I think it’s also possible, with the build of the case, to pop it open and have the ear plugs go flying, so be careful!
Overall, though, I’m really happy with these. It’s hard to imagine using anything else. If they upgraded the case, these would easily be my favorite.
