Clogs on Tap Water, Do Your Research

Update: Sawyer eventually provided some tips, and after multiple hot soakings and backflushings the filter is working. Nothing I did prior to the clog was contrary to the instructions. Sawyer still recommends storing dry and doesn't mention flushing with distilled water. Bottom line, your filter kit will need to include lots of tricks and patience. Original review follows.

I know these are popular and I was excited about the light weight, but I got zero use from this filter before it failed. Mine slows to an unusable flow rate after about 1/4 cup of tap water, or even water from a reverse osmosis filter. Backflush per instructions and I can get another 1/4 cup before it stops. That's less clean water than you need to backflush the filter. Emailed Sawyer support 2 working days ago, crickets. Soaked in vinegar per internet tips, no luck. It's a total loss.

Apparently if you let this filter dry after flushing with anything but distilled water the minerals will clog the hollow fibers. Even with distilled water, it may not after dry storage and must be soaked before your trip. Some recommend storing it wet, so then you must use bleach to keep the bacteria under control. You won't find this info on Sawyer's web site. So if you plan to rely on this in the backcountry, do your research and have a backup plan. For now I'll go back to my heavy but reliable MSR ceramic filter.

I bought this filtration system for my inaugural backcountry backpacking trip. It packs small, is very light, and is very easy to use. Simply fill the included bag from the water source, attach to the filter and squeeze. Waterflow is very rapid, though the rigidity of the supplied bags makes filling them a bit cumbersome. A number of reviewers have noted that they are prone to damage as well. Based on my experience, I intend to purchase a Cnoc Outdoors 2020 VECTO 3L Water Container before my next trip as it is much easier to fill from the water source and is more durable. The Sawyer Squeeze can also be used in coordination with a water bladder such as a Camelbak, either by directly connecting to the bladder to squeeze clean water into the bladder (optional kit SP115 Fast Fill Adapters for Hydration Packs required), or by being spliced in-line with the bladder so that the bladder can be filled directly from the water source and the water passed through the filter on the way to the bladder mouth piece (adapter included).

The Sawyer Squeeze package contains a syringe for backflushing/cleaning the filter, but based on reviews I ordered the SP150 Coupling for Water Filtration Cleaning and use that in coordination with a bottled water bottle (I used a LIFEWTR bottle) which works extremely well, and provides much better cleaning pressure than the supplied syringe. The $2.99 for the SP150 is well worth the cost given the convenience and functionality it provides, and the repurposed water bottle can double as an extra water container during an outing.

For comparison, my companions on the trip were using a GRAYL Ultralight that weighs 16 oz (compared to 3 oz and a much smaller pack size for the Sawyer) and were taking about twice as long to filter the same amount of water, with a much higher ratio of grumbling as well.

Pros:
• Lightweight
• Packs small
• Easy to use
• Quick flow
• Easy to backflush w/additional coupling
• Lots of online instructions/documentation available from Sawyer to get maximum utility and performance from the product

Cons:
• Supplied bags are rigid, cumbersome to fill, and prone to damage
• To get maximum utility from the Sawyer Squeeze's flexibility, optional kits/parts are required

Overall, I highly recommend the Sawyer Squeeze.

This is a really great water filter. The price for how many gallons it can purify in it's lifetime is one of the best that I've found. It's super easy to use, lightweight, and the price is around the same amount as what my local Walmart was selling them for.

You can use this water filter in so many situations: camping, hiking, ATV riding, hunting, fishing, power outages, traveling, etc... I also like that you can screw the filter onto a water bottle and use it that way if you wanted to, or you can use the pouches, and either drink it from the pouches with the filter, or squirt it into a drinking bottle or container.

Let me just say I love this product! It filters really well and is super easy to use with minimal squeezing. It comes with a net to hang it for gravity filtering, although it’s much faster to squeeze using the bag reservoirs so I would only use the gravity setup if you are trying to filter a really large amount of water while you chill. I personally don’t like using the filter in line on a hydration bladder because it means dirty water gets sucked through the tubing which can be hard to clean. I prefer to just use the water reservoir pouches provided and squeeze a couple of them into my camelback. Same thing with my water bottles. Although it doesn’t require a ton of suction to drink directly from the filter, I prefer to fill my water bottle with clean water and drink freely when I’m super thirsty instead of having to suck through the filter.

Overall, the sawyer is much easier to use than the life straws, are much more durable, and have a longer life span. The sawyer is supposedly rated for life and just requires regular cleaning.

The reason I’m giving it 4 stars is that in cold weather, the micro fibers in the filter will freeze and break, so this is not ideal for mountaineering or winter camping. You can store this in your jacket pocket during the day and your sleeping bag at night to prevent this, just takes some getting used to.

Another con is price gouging. I purchased the full sized Sawyer filtration system in July of 2023 for $29 without a sale or coupon. I came to buy another on April 2024 and now they are $46!

Bought this for a family backpacking trip and love it. I didn't keep track, but likely filtered 30-40 liters for our 3 day trip, and it showed no signs of slowing down. I only have one 3 day trip with this filter, but so far it's easily the best filter I've had. I've used hand pump filters, chemical treatment, boiling water, other gravity filters, and this is by far the best. It filters fast even with just gravity. If needed the extra squeeze speeds things up (something my last gravity filter would not allow). Most of the time we just hung up my filter bag walked away and came back when it was done.

When I got home I back flushed (also something my last gravity filter did not allow) and bleached per the instructions. It was easy and clearly had some affect as the backwash water was quite dirty.

With respect to the filter I really have nothing bad to say about it. For $40 it's a great deal even without the accessories.

If I had to be not picky, the only thing I could see making some improvement is some of the accessories.

I didn't have any issues with the bags, but others have reported issues, and I've had issues with similar style flasks in the past. I ended up using a 3 liter flask from my previous Katadyne befree and let gravity filter water straight into my 3 liter MSR hydration bladder. This worked great!

The fittings that came with it worked just ok. I like to have more hose, so again I stole some from one of my previous filters. I would have gotten by just fine with what was provided, but to get hands off filtering from one pouch to the next, I modified the setup a bit.

Last, is a problem I have thats not unique to this filter. Trying to fill a pouch from questionable stagnant water is challenging, the water usually needs some kind of prefiltering (bandana), and needs to be scooped out. The is one of the few scenarios where a hand pump filter with a prefilter on the inlet hose wins out.

Overall this is my favorite filter and expect it will be my primary filter from now on. If anything change my opinion I'll come back and update my review.

I bought this for my Pikes Peak hike because I read that there is no portable water supply along the way. Right before the hike, a returning hiker told us that there is water available both at Barr camp and at the A frame. I still had plenty of bottled water at Barr camp but needed to replenish at the A-frame. Unfortunately, the pipe that the water was coming from was just submerged upstream. I was already exhausted and didn't want to take the time to pull this filter out and learn how to use it for the first time, so I drank the stream water directly. There were three of us and the other guys were fine, but I paid for it for the next couple of days. Buy it, practice using it before you go, and use it!
