my favorite sunscreen ever!

I've had to wear sunscreen for years now - due to this weird reaction my skin has to the sun (polymorphous light eruption) and putting on sunscreen every day has not always been my favorite thing. I've used dozens of brands in the past, with varying degrees of success, but I've noticed this one stands out for me the most in that by the end of the day my face is not red, hot, my ears don't have a burning sensation the way previous sunscreens left me by the end of the day) - which to be fair, I don't reapply every two hours because that's too much work.

However... I've been so pleased with it, it's a little greasy / gross at first but it rubs in and after 2-3 hours, I don't really notice that it's on my face / body. PLUS... I don't smell like a beach anymore. It's nice to not hug people and they be like "why do you smell like you're going to the beach or a pool" LOL. It's a little expensive, but for me (with my specific condition) it's nice not to have little bumps on my face or body from the sun because the protection lasts all day (even though technically you're supposed to reapply it every 2 hours). I put it on my face, and I have sensitive skin - but zero issues with it clogging my pores or giving me any issues. I haven't had a single pimple or blackhead since using it. And I sweat and hit the gym 5X a week and no issues whatsoever.

Easy dispense, greasy

I love the concept of a big bottle of sunscreen. It has made wearing sunscreen easy. As a huge fan of Supergoop's Unseen Sunscreen, I was optimistic about this stuff. However, it is incredibly, unflatteringly greasy, as if Supergoop was designing a formula for body only. On the face, I look sweaty and ill. Even though glowy glass skin is trendy, this is too oily even for that. I have to powder over it.

At least it doesn't have the white cast of some mineral sunscreens, but mineral sunscreens are better for the environment and are less oily. I'm not sure I will purchase this again, unless the formula changes. It's about as greasy as Bath and Body Works sunscreen, without the nice smells. I don't think the cost is justified.

On the upside it has lasted several months.

NOT REEF FRIENDLY - has AVOBENZONE

Avobenzone is the FIRST ingredient listed on this product and it is a chemical relative to oxybenzone and they both are harmful and cause toxicity. All benzones and their derivatives cause coral bleaching.

This company used to make mineralized sunscreen, with zinc and titanium dioxide ingredients, and was among the best formula out there and GOOP promoted it as such. Some of GOOP's other products are still only mineralized. Mineralized sunscreen is the only truly reef safe sunscreen which does not bleach coral and kills ocean life. Since scaling, though company has started using chemicals in their formula along with most other American sold sunscreens, which are cheaper to produce. I bought this product thinking it would really be reef safe, but reef friendly does NOT mean reef safe.

In 2021 the FDA which governs suncreen safety proposed to updated sunscreen regulations. It found that only two ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, could be classified as safe and effective.

In 2021, the European Commission published that OXYBENZONE, AVOBENZONE, homosalate and octocrylene are not safe for toxicity and disrupt hormonal systems. They can be detected in the blood weeks after their last week. The European Commission placed regulations and limitations of these ingredients to below 2 percent. U.S. sunscreen manufacturers however are legally allowed to use these chemicals at up to 6 percent. Just do your research.

I really was appalled and disappointed when I saw that GOOP is using benzones now. Many countries and some US states are banning and restricting swimmers from using sunscreens that contain benzones (Hawaii, Thailand, Key West, Australia) but most of the US is slow to change. The FDA is slower to approve new UV filters and the US is far behind European and Asian formulas and regulations. The FDA hasn't approved a new UV filter since 1996. This product is NOT friendly to the oceans nor to your hormones or testosterone levels. We live in a place where this chemical is all too easily sold and I hope we all can hold a bit more awareness in double checking ingredients before purchasing.

Pump Leaks A Lot!

The sunblock itself is good, goes on smooth and isn't greasy.

The huge problem I have with this product is that for the price, which is obviously expensive, it's highly problematic to have the pump leak. I didn't mean a little, I mean ounces and ounces of sunblock causing puddles. The two variables that seem to cause this is heat and elevation. I have kept this sunblock in my truck and now can't because of the mess and hassle of having to clean it up and the knowledge how much money is lost everyone this has happened.

I bought this based on reviews and Wirecutter's recommendation. But it is SO GREASY! It leaves my face looking like an oil slick despite modest application. I feel it never fully soaks in and is very cosmetically inelegant for a chemical sunscreen. Maybe it's because it's a waterproof sunscreen that it has this finish, but I just really don't enjoy the finish or the smell and especially not for the price. I will not be repurchasing.

This is the first time I wrote a review in Amazon, I purchased this product mostly because it advertises “clean ingredients”. I was made aware by a relative about the yuka app that rates food and cosmetics to know the impact of the product on your health. What I surprised when I scanned the supergoop sunscreen and discovered that it contains hazardous ingredients (not bad, hazardous). So not much for the clean ingredients ad. Anyways needed to say it, because as a consumer if I read something in the package of a product, the minimum I expect is that it is true.

The only new thing that I used on my skin. I began the process of elimination. My allergic reaction isn’t from the food I ate or the clothes detergent I used because those are the same items I eat and used for years. The first time, I used the supergoop sunscreen, no problem at all. The second time, I started to itch a lot on my neck and upper arms. The third time, raised bumps and hives. I had to go to urgent care.

Test on a small patch of skin first! Not for sensitive skin!

I purchased this Play sunscreen for myself and two young children thinking it would save me a lot of time without compromising on sun safety. We normally use Thinkbaby SPF 50, but being a mineral sunblock it takes a long time to rub in and always leaves a white cast.

BUT... both of my children had a horrible allergic reaction to the Play sunscreen. I applied it in the afternoon and by the end of the night one of my kids had a red, slightly swollen, rash/hives covered face. We're on day 3 of Benadryl and Aquaphor and it's still in the process of healing.

I myself had no reaction, but both of my children are still suffering the consequences of me not testing on a small patch of their skin first. Lesson learned 10x over! But, my children did not have a reaction on their arms or legs, only their faces, so keep that in mind if you're testing on your little ones.

As for the product itself, it rubs in nicely but leaves a sticky residue. The smell is not great and reminds me of old lady perfume. I much prefer the scent of Thinkbaby which smells tropical and refreshing. I guess I'll just stick with the safer Thinkbaby and deal with the white cast.

Allergic reaction, smells too strong

The first thing I noticed was this sunscreen has a very strong smell that's no different from the usual sunscreens.

It provoked an allergic reaction. My nose dripped like crazy and my eyes stung. I washed it off my face and neck w soap and water. I gently flushed my eyes w cool water. Then all the symptoms cleared up.

Buyer beware.

The sunblock applies smoothly and it protects against the sun. However, it stains your clothes yellow and it is very hard to get out. There are sunscreens available that do not stain this prominently. It must be a special ingredient. I do not recommend for this reason alone.

I wanted to love this product because I’ve heard lots of good things about it, but alas! I made the mistake of not checking the ingredients list for chemicals that may react poorly with my skin—my own fault, for sure, as I took the “clean, natural ingredients” advertising as gospel. Don’t make my mistake!

This includes avobenzone as an active ingredient, which makes my skin feel like it’s releasing actual hellfire in the form of a painful, burning, sticky rash of irritated skin and teensy-weensy blisters. I regrettably used the sunscreen on my cheeks and neck on a kayaking trip ten days ago—the rest of my body was covered by UPF clothing, thank my fairy godmother—and I’m just today getting my normally smooth skin back, though I am still contending with peeling dryness where the rash was.

If you didn’t read this review in time and had a similar reaction, I’m so sorry. Use minimal products on your skin while it heals; dampen the affected area, slather on petroleum jelly, and stay out of the sun as much as possible until it heals. Normal moisturizers and other sunscreens are not your friend yet.

Whew. Okay, so, yeah—if you have sensitive skin or have had bad reactions to other sunscreens in the past, avoid this one and go for a zinc-based physical sunblock (like a certain Australian brand featuring a colorful amphibian) instead.

I took a huge gamble on buying this large pump size. I figured I'm purchasing it with my HSA so it's like you don't feel it like when out right purchase it, though HSA card is still my hard earned money. Anyway in short I absolutely HATE it, probably worse sunscreen I have ever purchased. Shame on me for buying such a large and expensive size without trying it out first. It has such great reviews I honestly thought it Must be great. If you absolutely hate that sticky icky globbed up nasty heavy greasy feeling this is exactly what it feels like. I don't know how I will get rid of it since I hate using it so much. Big mistake on my part. I usually go through all my sunscreens some I like better than others but this is just horrible and I force myself to use here and there simply bc it was so expensive and I have this big jug now that at this rate it will last me a lifetime bc I absolutely hate the way it feels. Never will I ever buy this brand again. Not for me.
