Decent Smart Speaker, But Room for Improvement

I recently purchased the Amazon Echo Pop, and while it has some good features, there are a few areas where it could be better.

Pros:

Sound Quality: The audio is surprisingly good for its size. It’s clear and has decent bass, making it suitable for casual listening.
Compact Design: The Echo Pop’s small and stylish design fits well in any room without taking up much space.
Alexa Integration: As expected, Alexa is responsive and integrates well with my other smart home devices. Voice commands are easily recognized, and it’s great for quick weather updates, setting reminders, and controlling lights.
Cons:

Connectivity Issues: I’ve experienced occasional connectivity drops with my Wi-Fi, which can be frustrating, especially when streaming music.
Limited Features: Compared to other Echo devices, the Echo Pop feels a bit limited in terms of features and capabilities. It lacks some of the more advanced functionalities found in higher-end models.

Constant software changing is bothersome and stressful for neurodivergence. Annoying, not helpful.

Honestly the functionality is fine. The speaker works, basic questions can get answered, alarm function is good, connection to Spotify is pretty good, etc.

Our issue is the constant tweaking and changing that occurs in the software itself. It really does appear that Alexa is programmed to constantly figure out new ways to bother you. It reminds me of a loud kid's toy that sounds like it's off and then suddenly yells out, "DON'T YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH ME?!" Amazon doesn't seem content with allowing Alexa to be something that sits on your desk and functions the way you want it to function, without bothering you in any way. They haven't made something that can just sit on your desk and function the way you ask it to function.

We have every single notification turned off, we've turned on "brief mode" which is supposed to make Alexa speak as little as possible. Still, no matter what we do, Amazon seems determined to program Alexa to ask us questions for every question we ask, sometimes completely out of left field. It's like the thing gets more and more desperate to be useful beyond the functions we've designated. At first, when asking for the weather today, it would constantly ask if we wanted the weather for the whole week. No. I said today because I want today's weather. Eventually that stopped, but then it started asking completely random stuff. The most recent one was, after asking the weather, it asked if I want to be updated on new movies as they come out. What? It's ridiculous. If I want the weather, now I just Google it.

Setting timers, same thing. You'd think set a timer, how easy it is. No, it asks questions about entertaining you while you wait. Or other random things that have nothing to do with what you just asked. No, please just set a timer. If I don't have one handy and I need a timer now, I just have Google do it.

My daughter was really enjoying asking how many days until Christmas and her birthday, and for a long time, Alexa would give the number of days. Now it has switched to months and weeks. I didn't ask how long until this event. We specify "how many days" and now no matter how I ask the question, some programming change has made it impossible to get the number of days. My daughter's little morning ritual is gone. She loved asking and hearing the reply, but now I just Google it and she's learning to read the numbers instead. Even with those very simple questions, though, it would ask things like "would you like to hear a Christmas joke?" No. I just want to be told the number of days and then have the device go quiet.

There are many other little issues here and there. For a while, brief mode seemed to stop all of that, but it's back full force and I can't figure out how to shut it off. Probably many neurotypical people won't understand how stressful it feels, but not knowing if the device will just be silent after I ask my question, and never knowing what it will say or ask makes me never want to use it. My autistic son unplugged his because he couldn't stand it, either. I thought it would be so helpful, and I bought multiples for our house, but honestly there are plenty of other options out there for all of the functionality of this thing when I need it. I was hoping it could be centralized in one thing, but in their desperation to make the Alexa devices oh-so-useful and indispensable, Amazon has made them annoying, especially for anyone with any kind of neurodivergence.

Stopped working right after Warranty ended

I purchased my Echo Pop for my bedroom in November, it's the least used device in my house. It worked great and I really liked the aesthetics of the device in my space. It's now June and the device won't connect to the internet. I have tried trouble shooting multiple times, in multiple rooms, still will not connect. I contacted customer service about the issue. We went through all the steps and nothing worked. I was told the device only had a 6 month warranty and was offered a 15% discount to purchase a new device and to keep the broken one. If I were to trade in the device I would get a 20% discount on a new device. I'm really disappointed in the lack of product quality and the super low level resolution options given by Amazon for their own products. My other Echo devices have lasted years. We have only had to replace 1 of them after several years. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a device like this to last a year to several years. Maybe this a how they are pushing to buy the extended warranties. It feels really crappy and disappointing regardless.

Annoying, settings you can't change, poor functionality

Took forever and many steps and devices and email confirmations to get my Sony smart TV connected. Finally had the Echo controlling it, just one problem: it turns off the TV speakers, insists on being the speaker. Okay, next problem: no sound from it. Turn the TV setting back to TV speakers and they work again but the Echo disconnects. Also, a lovely feature is sounds and voice notification whenever you turn the TV on or off manually. So I disconnected and gave up on pairing my TV. What a shame they make things work this way. I had a larger Echo in 2022 briefly (came free with a TV I returned, so it went back too) and it worked beautifully. I guess for the money I got basic Alexa services but don't have much hope for it controlling other devices.

Not eligible for trade-in!!

I’ve had my echo pop for about a year and two months and it is definitely my least favorite echo device I’ve owned. It randomly lights up blue when spoken to like it should, but then never responds and the blue light stays on. When this happens, you have to do a soft reset on the device Or just unplug it for a little while so it resets itself. I’ve never had to do this with any of my other echo devices so I find it very aggravating. It’s 3 feet away from my Wi-Fi extender it’s connected to, so it’s definitely not the Wi-Fi causing the issue. There are a lot of videos on YouTube of people also having this issue.

The thing I am most disappointed about is that this device is NOT eligible for trade-in! I was going to get a different Alexa device on primeday but of course I can’t use the one I don’t like as a trade-in. Thanks Amazon.

Do not buy this device if either of these issues make you question the purchase. I would not buy it again.

I really liked this device for the first 7 months I’ve had it. Now - it does what everyone else finds out eventually…decides when it’s going to work and when it’s not.

I’m finding that every night when I go to set the morning alarm it isn’t working. At first it would hear me but it was as if the device was muted although it wasn’t. Then the light would just be glowing solid green and non-responsive . Now it’s completely dead at night. I have to unplug it and reset it every night - and I know eventually my alarm just isn’t going to go off.

For a device that is in my bedroom and is basically only used as an alarm - lasting 7 months is ridiculous for the price. I can get a $9 clock like my kids have that has lasted years. Or just use my phone.

Something needs to be done about the poor connectivity and quality of this device

Not a speaker - only uses Alexa - not compatible with Apple music

I got this to use as a speaker. However it’s not compatible with Apple Music. It says you can use it through the Alexa app. But you can’t listen to any of your playlist & you can’t change the song in the Apple Music app. Bc it plays the music through Alexa even when you say play through Apple Music. And you can’t type in a song in the Alexa music tab. You have to speak it.

Also- it only works when connected to wifi. Which sucks for a speaker.

This is more so a tool to use for your home & not so much a speaker. The volume is low (as a lot of the reviews say) but I don’t care about that at all, it’s for a small room for my art studio so it’s good for me. I would keep it if it was compatible with my music app. Or I would even switch my music app and manually recreate all of my playlist on Amazon music… if only it was better equip for that.

I’m not saying it’s a bad product. I’m only leaving the review for people who buy this strictly as a speaker so they don’t get disappointed and possibly lose out on money or have to go through the hassle of returning the product.

If you have an old echo dot, don’t buy this. your echo dot is simply better. The Echo Pop feels light, cheap, and the sound quality really isn’t that much of an improvement from the dot. I’ve had to restart my echo pop several times by unplugging it and plugging it back in because i’ve had several experiences of it just getting stuck? example, i’ll have it call my phone and despite me telling it to hang up or “stop” it’ll just sit in the voicemail until the end. half of the time it doesn’t activate when you say “alexa” and the other half of the time when you do finally get it to respond to alexa, it just won’t do what you ask. “hey alexa, what time is?” it’ll light up blue, wait a second, and then just go stop. i’ve had it where it’s sat at a green blinking light for several minutes, just a bunch of random unnecessary issues.

I bought this Oct of 2023 and for the last couple of weeks I have needed to restart this device almost every day because it has frozen with a solid orange light. I have read through the FAQs and a bunch of online how to's and the only thing that gets it working again is unplugging it, waiting and plugging it back in. I went to see about getting a replacement and when I chose that option it says to look at the support site and go through the self troubleshooting. At the time of my purchase it looks like it was on sale for ~$18, now it's ~$40 after tax. Thinking I'll just go back to using Google home or something since Amazon doesn't want to hold up their warranty on their products, just like they promised ad free streaming and then forced ads on everyone before the end of the contract.

Only thing I like is the color! It wasn't worth the frustration it caused! Setting this thing up literally crashed my Amazon account and I had hell to pay getting my account back!! It answers the TV better than me or my friends! And randomly just starts telling me whatever it was looking for couldn't be found... well, OK, except I didn't ask it anything! I was told, when talked into getting it, that it would be easy to do all you needed was an internet connection! That's not true, at all! You also need 2 separate apps, email and a lot of patience and a working understanding of technology! Which defeats the entire point of my interest in a device to help my 84 year old father, who's new to being blind and the cave people he lives with to do all the things he can't see to do any more, like tell time, listen to music, etc! I have a reasonable amount of understanding with computers and internet, and it was days and days of dealing with it to get it connected to be used! The people he lives with have 0 experience with any of it! They don't have email addresses, social media, home internet, they barely have TV brought in by rabbit ears, because in town a house antenna isn't allowed, (not that close to the military base) and their cell phones are basic work phones, so no room for extra apps! All of this the salesperson knew before they suggested this mess! When we talk to it, it only responds sometimes and the other day it started playing music and no matter what I said it would not shut up! A Disney medley, but still, 15 minutes of yelling alexa stop playing music, and other words to that effect, did make my throat a bit scratchy for a few days. I don't have an accent to decipher so idky it would not shut it. To be fair it was asked to play music, but a specific song by a specific artist that didn't sound anything like Disney. I for sure will NOT be sending this annoying thing to my dad and his cave people. So basically a waste of time and my refund "credit". Smdh

Update!

Amazon contacted me and stated that there is an issue the echo pops and some newer echo dots are having and once an update gets sent out it should be fixed.

Bought this in January. It was perfect for my son’s room, good price too. Well, just recently it just completely dies. Buttons won’t work, nothing works. I have to unplug it, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in. He uses it mainly to control his strip lights. It’s frustrating that we haven’t even had it for a year and it’s already not working anymore. And of course it’s passed the return window so now I’m stuck with a broken Alexa and will be forced to buy a new one.
