Kidde Never Disappoints

My smoke detectors are hard-wired with a battery back-up. Somehow, the battery always seemed to start chirping for replacement at 3 AM. This new one sold me with a 10-year built in battery. Easy install.

Old plug doesn't fit...

Replacing the older model, plug for the power supply is different, so I had to rewire, which is annoying. At least the mounting bracket is the same.
Not needing 9v battery is a nice improvement over the older model

I thought I could easily install this and replace an old smoke alarm. But silly me I have to adjust all my wires and change out the mounting system for this to work. So unfortunately as of yet installation of this is still pending as I need my hubbie’s help…. So I know this isn’t a helpful review but it is at least honest!

I like the features of this alarm and so am looking forward to the day when it gets installed.

Solidly built; line voltage only and cannot be connected to alarm system

Smoke detectors tend to come in two types, standalone battery operated and hardwired. The hardwired ones are often connected to a central alarm box (in the house) and are powered by low voltage, typically 12 or 24 volts, with either 2 or 4 wires.

This ‘Kidde Hardwired Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector’ is neither. I saw the ‘hardwired’ part and like all the other hardwired described detectors I’ve purchased, assumed it could be run on low voltage and can be connected to an alarm box. Neither is true. It runs on full line voltage, which means you have to have 120 volts at the location, which I don’t think would be common. (Especially since it suggests the best mounting location is 12 inches from the ceiling; who has a 120 volt box there?) Second, you cannot connect it back to a central alarm. In other words, this unit pretty much assumes you ONLY have this detector, or only connect it to other similar Kidde detectors (it will do that), but again, the other detectors also need a 120 volt feed.

You can separately buy a relay, so that when the alarm trips it will send a NO or NC connection/signal to a device, but NOT to an alarm box, unless it happens to have 120 volt NO or NC, which may exist but I’ve never seen one. So, with such a relay you could have the detector set off a siren or a light when it trips, but only if it is 120 volts. You can’t send a signal back to your box that says ‘detector tripped,’ and initiate a siren or a dialer there.

So IF you have power at the location you want the detector, and IF you are not wanting to connect to a central box, this detector is okay (I tested smoke, not CO2) and will save you from changing batteries. Otherwise I’d stick with the more common type wired detectors.

It works and comes from a well-known brand. However, it is a bit pricey, and I would prefer a better option within this price range.

I haven't installed it yet because the "plug-in" section does NOT fit on the one that I was trying to replace. Not much I can say about the item since it can't be hooked up without me finding the proper plug somewhere...so...maybe if I find that part I'll be able to come back and update this review.
