Ged Garner sent an underwhelming Fleetwood Town into the FA Cup third round with a second-half winner that ended the run of non-league side Ebbsfleet United.

Garner, who had hit the post after just five minutes, found the bottom corner for the decisive goal with what was the League One side's only shot on target.

Ebbsfleet had chances before that - the best of which saw Dominic Poleon foiled by goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk from close range in the first half.

It was the National League South side's inability to shut down Garner as he burst forward from near the halfway line that ultimately settled the tie, with the finish a rare moment of attacking quality from Scott Brown's side.

It took a brilliant block from Josh Earl to deny substitute Franklin Domi from close range in the fifth minute of stoppage time to ensure Fleetwood reached the third round for the first time in three years.

They added their name to Monday night's third round draw, which could see them land a potential money-spinning tie in January against a Premier League or Championship club.

The draw is will be broadcast at 19:00 GMT on BBC Two and online.

In a lively start at Stonebridge Road Stadium, Garner almost gave the visitors the ideal start, but saw his fierce effort come off the left-hand post.

Ebbsfleet - a side that only lost top spot in National League South on Saturday, as their nearest rivals took advantage of their cup run - threatened numerous times in an energetic first-half showing that belied the three league and 58-place gap between the two sides.

The best two chances fell to Poleon, who first fired into the side netting after stepping beyond Fleetwood keeper Stolarczyk, who did well minutes later to smother a close-rage shot from the forward.

The hosts also had shouts for a second-half penalty waved away after a cross appeared to hit the arm of Shaun Rooney as he slid in for a block.

While Fleetwood laboured in their effort to break down their opponents, hard work from Lewis Warrington to win the ball and link up with Garner was rewarded with the winner after 64 minutes.

Ebbsfleet pressed for a leveller to try send the tie to a replay, and only Earl denied them that with his injury-time block on Domi's close-range shot.
